Exactly! It's the macro/micro scale that teachers are continuously adjusting to. The constant, everyday adjustment, even for lessons that were successful last year or even for the previous class.

Complicated process = tailored product When I was at Berlin International School, we did a multi-month deep dive into 5 national curriculums as inspiration to rewrite and realign our K-5 curriculum for social studies/science. It was very complex and the product was incredibly bespoke.

It feels like they're saying that curriculum writing is this bizarrely labyrinthine process but at the same time the product is so simple & vague that it's applicable to every single child with no adaptation at all. Both those things cannot be true. They're not true in any industry.

Went to Verizon to set up my mom's phone and the associate and I started talking about this. So many seniors come in dealing with scams. He's recommending this phone specifically to families who have a loved one with dementia: www.razmobility.com/solutions/me...

I don't think people understand that training in law enforcement changes how you perceive situations. I worked with several law enforcement agents who retrained as teachers & they were *terrible* at risk assessment. Zero emotional regulation. Most crashed out in two to three years or were fired.

What the hell is this???
A "map" of Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Singapore that completely leaves out Sri Lanka. Major parts of countries are missing. Several countries are incredibly oversized in a way that ignores the shape of the earth. The more you look at it, the more inaccurate you realize it is.

It was the days of Bill Gates' "merit pay" where all the teachers in Title 1 schools were financially kneecapped because we wanted to help educate children in poverty. And then they had the audacity to complain about teacher shortages so we ended up with a bunch of TFA people who crashed out. 🙃

Exactly! They can blame the LGBTQ community, communism, liberals, etc. everyone but themselves. It's just bizarre seeing the shift from a very niche Christian cultural phenomenon to mainstream media this fast which tells you there is a pipeline of Christian nationalists in these newsrooms now.

Children have always cut off their parents. But white Christian nationalists demand a stream of victims, young people to train up in their abusive system and tithe to their orgs and churches. You can see the leak from niche Christian denominations into the mainstream media in less than two years.

When I say "moral panic", I mean manufactured problem that seemingly originated from a white Christian nationalists, a group that is losing a significant amount of young people. Just like the Satanic panic in the 80s where Christian nationalists used moral issues to gain political gains.

Just like the connection between patriarchy/paternalism and rape culture the line from abusers at home DARVO and social/political DARVO seems like a straight one to me and many people grew up being told their abuse and manipulation was not abuse and was in fact normal or not a big deal.

I’m not shocked that in this moment of widespread normalization of toxic behavior folks are being shamed for setting boundaries w/ abusive family members. I imagine most of the impulse to normalize and downplay the berating, lying, manipulation & narcissism of public figures starts at home.

We had such a lovely, dedicated staff. We survived so much. One long holiday weekend, our ceiling collapsed & destroyed all our kindergarten classrooms. I sat with a first year teacher sorting through the wreckage of books, toys & stuffed animals. Found out later she was the one who nominated me!

In a hilarious turn of events, I won teacher of the year for the district 🤣 My principal, Dr. Roz Fisher, worked so hard to keep us safe both from the state and from disaster.
A very young Rachel, a white woman with short hair, is wearing a blue and white floral shirt, smiling and holding a teacher of the year plaque. Standing next to her also smiling is Dr. Rosalind Fisher, a Black woman with short hair a navy top and black rimmed glasses in a stylish shape.

I still lost $9000 worth of my salary for the year we were a "failing" school. Not as in the school lost it, each teacher personally lost part of their salary. It was at that point I left US public school teaching. And here we are, 20 years later and they're trying the same tired shit.

Superintendent saw 32 kids reading books, doing activities, able to converse with her about their thoughts and she loved it. Congratulated my principal on all the improvements. I was doing the opposite of everything the state mandated for improvement. No script, just good teaching.

After a week, I refused and went back to teaching the standards with the resources we had. I used my own money to buy $1 Scholastic books to create literature circles. I ran literacy stations. My students were happy and learning. So the principal brought the superintendent to observe my class.

It was quite literally impossible. I had 32 children from 9-10 years old with ability levels spanning 4 separate grade standards. We were rationing paper because the state refused to pay for more than one box per class for the entire semester. For 32 students.

Rachel Ernst @rachelernst.myatproto.social · 20/10/2026
The big push was for scripted curriculum because obviously as a "failing school" we couldn't be trusted. Despite a talented staff, the state that consultants from textbook companies who had never been in a classroom needed to tell us how to teach. Their constant drum was "follow the script".

Rachel Ernst @rachelernst.myatproto.social · 20/10/2026
What happened next is that our school was inundated with state mandated consultants who quite literally screamed at us for "hating our students and failing them". Remember two out of 800 had failed and we knew exactly why and had already been supporting them. But context didn't matter.

Storytime: 19 years ago, my school was labelled a "failing" school by our state because 66% of students from a certain ethnicity failed our state exam for elementary students. There were only three students of this ethnicity. The two that failed were from the same family who had been struggling.

An interesting context is these articles were showing up about two years ago in conservative Christian spaces and have now appeared in big Christian publications. It's quite literally a "moral panic" as so many churches have lost young people who don't want to participate in abuse & fascism.

It’s telling that the cut-off parents in these sob stories are almost always cut off by daughters—we socialize women not just to absorb abuse, but to misinterpret abuse as bids for care. Meanwhile men are socially expected to distance themselves from their natal families anyway.

If friends say, "Hey, have you listened to the new season of Sold a Story?" just say, "No, they're a propaganda podcast". That's it. They got so much traction with last season because teachers were tired and just wanted help and instead got sold out to curriculum companies.

Rachel Ernst @rachelernst.myatproto.social · 19/10/2026
The way they work is how all propaganda works: take a real problem that is incredibly complex and insist there's only one solution, a simple solution that they personally can sell you either through a product or service.
120 2
Rachel Ernst @rachelernst.myatproto.social · 19/10/2026
So many educators and scholars tried to reason with the Sold a Story people in the first season in good faith. It's become really obvious that this is a political propaganda project. Teachers need to treat it as such and stop friends and family from listening to it as if it were gospel.

The first thing I figured out about teaching is how hard it is to teach somebody else’s lesson plan. Not only do you need to adapt to the actual students in front of you, but you need to find your own way to do it. That’s why we design backwards from where we want our students to get to.

What’s really incredible to me is how the big theme of S1 was “education experts can’t be trusted bc they develop cults of personality around junk science,” and here in S2 it’s like, “teachers ought to unquestioningly implement the lessons that experts feed them.”

Haunting explanation from a ESPN producer on why she quit over the network’s all-out embrace of sports betting: www.cjr.org/the-intervie...
My grandfather, my father, and one of my brothers were pretty much destroyed by sports gambling addiction. I grew up in Ventura, California, and multiple times, we suddenly had to move because of extreme financial ups and downs. I mean, I grew up in a sportsbook. We didn’t go to museums and typical places kids go to. We were dragged to Las Vegas in the eighties and hanging out in the Hilton and Caesars sportsbooks, when kids weren’t supposed to be around there. I remember going to the horse track, going to the dog track.
My brother died thirteen years ago on the sidewalk in downtown Las Vegas. It’s a stark reality, but it illustrates the tragic arc of being brought there as kids so our dad could gamble at sportsbooks, to then surviving on the streets there as a homeless person and dying at thirty-six.

I grew up in a hospitality home but we did it through rhythms, hosting pancake lunch after church with new people and a rotating group of widows. Thursday afternoon snacks after sports practice, etc. So many people don't have common rhythms or aren't already in community & it makes it hard.
