I know you've probably got a million things planned while you're there, but I'll put my little two cents in that if you catch the fast train to Kanazawa, it's totally worth it. Easy to navigate with several wonderful attractions and one of the best garden/castle complexes in the country.
Nighttime shot of Kanazawa castle walls and moat with cherry blossom trees hanging over the water. The tree boughs are illuminated and against the dark sky and dark wall are bright light pink. They are also reflected in the moat water.

Cat tax for Will Ferrell the cat Pronounced with an outrageous French accent: Veel F-air- ul Check the alt text for a Will Ferrell the cat story.
A picture of the fluffiest cat you've ever seen. Just one big ball of fur. Sweetest little face. Will Ferrell the cat is on a pink geometric bedspread and extending a single paw. This paw almost immediately got caught on the velcro that I use to tie up my computer code and involved me trying to soothe Will Ferrell while carefully extricating his paw while he wanted to flail around.
Unfortunately, Will Ferrell and I had a falling out as he was happy to see me in the middle of the night as I was walking back from the bathroom. He truly is a ball of fur and is actually quite a skinny cat so he walked in front of me to rub against my legs and my foot hooked under his tummy and I accidentally catapulted him down the hallway. Poor guy was quite put out and I was so upset. Thankfully, I came back 5 days later and he had forgiven me.

What the hell is this???
A "map" of Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Singapore that completely leaves out Sri Lanka. Major parts of countries are missing. Several countries are incredibly oversized in a way that ignores the shape of the earth. The more you look at it, the more inaccurate you realize it is.

In a hilarious turn of events, I won teacher of the year for the district 🤣 My principal, Dr. Roz Fisher, worked so hard to keep us safe both from the state and from disaster.
A very young Rachel, a white woman with short hair, is wearing a blue and white floral shirt, smiling and holding a teacher of the year plaque. Standing next to her also smiling is Dr. Rosalind Fisher, a Black woman with short hair a navy top and black rimmed glasses in a stylish shape.

Alt Text because this is exceptional.
This is a small fluffy, tan dog sitting in front of a red bench that has four posters on the wall next to it. But what makes it unique is the use of space and lighting.
It is dark, like black around the edges. There are two can lights on the ceiling that are lighting the area but the way they are angled you see parts of the colorful posters but not all. The lights reflect on the shiny red bench and also meet in the middle so it looks like the dog is in a puddle of light that eases out into the darkness. There's a white lead from the dog's collar that goes back to the shiny red bench that creates a visual interest and adds an uneasy quality due to the asymmetry.

Unsurprising that even with a chunk of my adulthood outside of the US, I'm still California through and through (with Midwest family).
Map of the US with "heat index" style shading from deep red to blue. Nearly the entire west coast is red with a concentration on California, Nevada and Arizona with a patch of upper Midwest. Cities most and least like you.
Most similar : San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix
Least similar : New Orleans, Atlanta, Houston.
What gave you away: freeway, roundabout, icing is thinner than frosting and made of powdered sugar and milk or lemon juice, roly poly.

With alt text:
A rectangle shaped frame in black has an interior frame made entirely of tiny brown seeds. In the frame is a hyper-realistic depiction of a photograph from Minneapolis of neighbors filming ICE agents. You can see the back of an ICE agent, but just his arm. The focus of the piece is on the small crowd of citizens filming the encounter on their phones. They are both dressed in winter gear but the woman in the center is wearing a green bathroom and has fuzzy slippers. Around her are neighbors, one with a medical mask on, others in beanies and large coats. They are holding up cell phones to record.
This entire scene is depicted in seeds and organic material, even the faces are created with incredibly small seeds of different shades of skin colors.
The title of the piece "Witness" is vertical on the right side of the brown interior frame. It is done in white seeds, reminiscent of intricate beading work.

Last time I was there, I turned the corner and registered them out of the corner of my vision and my whole body went into fight/flight/freeze mode 😂 I knew they weren't real but my brain was still like "Just in case..."
A pond in the background with a hill rising up toward a path. There's trees and shrubs but the ground is mostly visible. There are three Crystal Palace dinosaur models that look like a tiger/horse combo. They are tan but pretty much covered in green moss so they blend in with the scenery.

Happy Montgomery Brawl day to all who celebrate. Here's my favorite edit.
À screenshot of the "Montgomery Brawl" of August 5. It shows a dock where two shirtless white boys had blocked an entire riverboat from docking and then attacked Captain Pickett, a Black man, for advocating for the safety of his passagers. This is where the white men "found out" as several young, athletic Black men came to Captain Pickett's aid. There are at least 10 of them. The screenshot was edited to include Doctor Stranger's portals, a throwback to a very particular scene of heroism in the Marvel movie Endgame.

Yeah, that's not real food. That's the issue.
Close up of an AI generated food menu for a breakfast sandwich. The company tagline is "Made Fresh. Real Food. Good Morning."
The breakfast sandwich is a strange stack of food that doesn't look like food. It's supposed to be a bagel breakfast sandwich, but the egg section is braided. The bacon parts are tendrils. The sausage patty looks like gristle balls that have been chained together in a loop. There's some sort of neon orange sauce that is dripping down the edges. The entire thing is out of proportion.

Uh, since when do we sell soda by the inch???
An AI created menu for a restaurant. The text reads:
1. Game Night Box "Perfect for the Squad!"
$34.99
12 inch cheese pizza
12 wings
3 fountain sodas
16 inch Pepsi

The pictures of the food are strange, overly bubbled and look disgusting. The cheese pizza is has brown bubbles all over it in a set pattern. The chicken wings look like stripes of globs of poop. The fountain sodas are in Pepsi cups but the ice and soda in it are round so it looks like they're full of black jelly beans.

I googled the SSPX church in the area where my dad was a funeral director (massive parish) & um...this is the picture they posted of the location. 😂 The actual building is 100% a small house that's been converted. They could totally own this but it seats 12 people.
The interior of a SSPX chapel in the San Diego area. It has luxury vinyl flooring in that weird beige/brown combo. There is an altar at the front and there are six pews. Each pew can seat maybe two people? There is a curtain rail where they can close off the whole area with a red velvet curtain. It has the kind of overhead lighting you would see in a 80's office building. In total, it's the size of the average US living room.

This was the first 15 minutes of Dylan Wiliam's session and you could hear a pin drop.
There is a moral dimension to teaching: it's selfish to get better at things that make the teacher feel better but have no effect on students.
Doing things in different learning styles leads to deeper, more connected learning; it's exhausting though, teaching in a varied way leads to retention
Robert Bjork: desirable difficulties in learning, smudged copy vs clear copy.
Memory is the residue of thought; if you make learning too easy, they will not remember it. Learning is a change in long-term memory.
Research shows that changing teacher practice is what brings student achievement.
Teachers don't need to be more knowledgeable; they need more support to put into practice what you already know. Changing what you do is changing a habit.
You need to change your habits to be a better teacher.
There needs to be a new model of professional development.

This makes me teary. When I went in 2010, people were complaining about paying for a place that wasn't finished. I felt like screaming, "We get to see a cathedral built in our lifetime!" Inside it was manic & loud. I put in earplugs & stood watching artisans, suspended in air, carve the pillars.

If you haven't had a chance to look at these maps, they are absolutely bonkers. My neighbor 2 minutes away from me is now in a different congressional district but my friend who lives FOUR HOURS AWAY is now in the same district as me. Her neighbor is, get this, in the SAME DISTRICT as my neighbor!
The new Tennessee district maps. The state of Tennessee is shaped like a long slanted rectangle with a sharper pointed edge at the northeast corner. The districts which used to be in clumps next to each other are now in weird, bizarre shapes. One district labelled 5 starts in the middle of the state, goes north west to the northern most border, then drops down the western edge to the farthest southwest point. Another district looks like an erupting volcano with a section just randomly shooting into the middle of the state. Several counties are cut in half or three ways so that neighbors don't vote with each other.

Lily Zheng's excellent post today on AI. "Laying off their internal experts for a short-term stock bump and more cash to pour into AI investments is like selling your chicken to buy more birdfeed."
"AI is doing this-" "AI is doing that-" Nope. AI doesn't do squat on its own. But PEOPLE are certainly invoking AI to cover for their questionable decision-making. Our fixation on the technology, like it has agency on its own, is giving individual peoples' poor choices a free pass.

Does AI "cause" workslop? No. But people using AI certainly produce it, and a lot of it. Why? Their jobs are poorly defined. Their workplace has little accountability. Their leaders are delusional with hype and are measuring token usage, not quality. People are under enormous pressure to do more, but not necessarily better. Every incentive is aligned to pump out slop at scale, with LLMs as the heavy machinery doing the pumping: if we want less slop, we need different incentives. Does AI "cause" layoffs? Absolutely not. Leaders could leverage the technology to do anything: identify new business opportunities, better meet customer needs, empower workers to do less drudge work and more problem-solving. Laying off their internal experts for a short-term stock bump and more cash to pour into AI investments is like selling your chicken to buy more birdfeed. Leaders who do this are self-destructing their employee morale, culture, trust, connection, talent pipeline, and more.

Does AI "cause" inequality? Not on its own. But people rushing to automate systems they don't understand are certainly making things worse. If your hiring or promotions process starts off as a bias-ridden likability contest that blatantly discriminates against qualified candidates, what do you think you'll get by automating it? A blatantly discriminatory bias-ridden likability contest at 100x scale and 100x speed, with 1/100th the transparency. Your "forward-thinking" vendor partnership and "future of HR" talk is sprinting you towards your next class-action lawsuit. None of this is inevitable. None of this is acceptable! Whenever we hear the fatalistic sentiment that "AI is doing X" the bare minimum response must be to push back with, "why is [person using or invoking AI] choosing to do that?" Whenever we feel the push to use LLMs in ways that violate our own values, the bare minimum response must be to ask, "why would I choose to do this, and what other choices do I have?"

Our current upside-down world has put the onus of responsibility on the individual, rather than the organization or the institution or the government. It's far from ideal. If we give up this shred of accountability, we'll have nothing left. So let's do better, and refuse to accept the slop, the harm, and the cruelty as given, and hold each other accountable to better. Yes?

Folks, I know a lot of people aren't around 3 year olds a lot but some things you need to know, their fine motor skills are terrible because they've only been on the planet 3 years and their literal hands & brains haven't grown enough.
What can my child do at this age?
As your child continues to grow, you will notice new and exciting abilities that develop. Children may progress at different rates, but these are some of the common milestones most children reach in this age group:

Runs and jumps easily
Walks up the stairs unassisted
Rides a tricycle
Washes and dries hands
Holds crayon between fingers and thumb (not a fist) and can draw a circle
Catches a large ball most of the time
Serves themselves food or pours a drink with supervision
Unbuttons some buttons
Can concentrate on tasks for 8 or 9 minutes
Has all 20 primary ("baby") teeth
Vision is nearing 20/20
Bladder and bowel control are usually established and uses potty chair or toilet
May sleep 11 to 13 hours total and may still take a short afternoon nap

Map of the south of England. Shows a blue dot where I was at Euston Station in London and the arrow to the very small distance I wanted to go with the Overground train. In the far left top corner of the map 57km away is Leighton Buzzard where I ended up and had to turn around. It's not quite Milton Keyes but close.
