A few years ago I had a flight of whimsy where I decided to plant some banksias right next to my loungeroom with the idea that one day I'd be able to casually watch black cockatoos from the comfort of my couch. My friends, that day hath cometh.

#academicsky I've only just heard about this but at first glance I don't like it at all. #Turnitin have updated their End User License Agreement so they can use student data (ie work) to train their #AI models. Sounds grossly unethical to me!

Finally getting round to reading this: YES, @rjwatt42.bsky.social! > academia [now demands] conformity, compliance, obedience and that this is stifling universities to the point where they will cease to exist as anything other than a machine. The only escape […] is to make room for prophets.
Priests see a system as structure and then meaning.
They are rule-makers, rule-followers, averse to going outside a domain that can be managed by rules, by laws, by rituals.
How rather than Why.
Priests make academia predictable, navigable, safe.
Prophets see academia as a meaning and then structure.
They are meaning-seekers, story-tellers, uncomfortable with limitations and structures.
Why and then How.
Prophets keep academia focussed on its purposes.

I heard rosellas outside. So I grabbed my camera and snuck out the back and waited. Amazingly, an adult and young one flew into my backyard. I wasn't very well hidden so it's a bit of a miracle they didn't skidaddle. The adult went down on the ground to feast on the freshly whipper-snippered grass 😀

Coxon could've mentioned the environmental catastrophe of AI data centers, or how ChatGPT has led people to killing themselves and others. Instead, he retold a dramatized and manipulative version of the Hugging Face attack that left the AI labs blameless. www.wheresyoured.at/ai-is-alread...
At no point did Coxon bring up how ChatGPT was used as a “suicide coach,” directly caused a murder-suicide, or aided and abetted in mass shootings in Florida and Canada, or the horrifying gas turbines poisoning black communities. His own discussion of the Hugging Face attack — much like all of his criticisms — focuses on the anthropomorphization of large language models as this unknowable, unstoppable force, with no real responsibility for anyone involved.
