A few years ago I had a flight of whimsy where I decided to plant some banksias right next to my loungeroom with the idea that one day I'd be able to casually watch black cockatoos from the comfort of my couch. My friends, that day hath cometh.
Lil black cockatoo head peeking at me through my windowFour black cockatoos in an olive tree eating banskia seed heads.

In breaking news from this weekend, I came up with a new phrase which I humbly offer to the 2026 internet lexicon of humanity; Greige-bait (noun): to deliberately provoke viewer engagement by stripping all personality and character from houses, furniture or other objects as part of a DIY reel.

There are two wolves inside you. One wants to eat the snackie now. The other wants to bury the snackie for later.
A black cocker spaniel holding a bone shaped chew in his mouth. If you look very closely into his eyes, you can see a handful of braincells having a small meltdown as his impulse centre receives a flood of contradictory messages.

I have a ridiculously fat Eastern-barred Bandicoot living at the bottom of my garden. I'm planning put in an updated, ye olde secret garden style side access gate and now have to factor in fat bandicoot access into its design.

Put Soul Coughing's 'Screenwriters Blues' as a backing track to this and it's actually pretty good.

Watching Raiders of the Lost Ark for the first time in an age, thinking for some reason the market scene location looks kinda familiar and excuse me but wdym I was in an iconic Indiana Jones filming location 20 years and did not even know?! I was too focused on the cheap rugs probably.

Hey, so if you, say, don't run the business page for a not for profit organisation, you might have missed the news that those scammy fuckers at Meta are now making business pages pay for posting more than 2 links a month. Minimum $23AUD/month for a 'Meta One' account.

We're just never going to stop cosying up to the US, no matter how degenerate, corrupt and totalitarian their political state becomes, are we? And no, I'm not sharing that picture of Trump and Albanese because it will ruin the aesthetics of my feed. Don't think I don't consider these things.

Shitty phonecam from the 'on this day' memories vault, from That Thing In The Dust. After this I took a slow train to Merced and hitched a ride with a car full of hot Spanish rock climbing firefighters (I know, right?) and installed myself at a very chill cabin on the edge of Yosemite for a few days

One day I dream of a calm utopian future where the lifelong, painfully proactive efforts I make to specifically avoid people with zero forward planning skills absolutely blowing up my schedule on the regular actually works.

On the days when my posting is a little manic, I need you to know that behind the scenes is a fragile human whose mental health is being held hostage by Windows 11 and a rapidly failing work computer and this how I am coping/not coping omg it's been at 99% downloaded for 45 minutes I'm going to cry.

Demonic leeks...aka how I keep the door to door religious salespeople away. If pictures of my garden and handsome dogs take your fancy, there's a whole backlog on insta: applewood_and_earth
A planter box of leeks growing happily under the all seeing eye of Baphomet aka a ram skull I found in a paddock. Also some bunting. Because I'm a whimsical goblin.

Want to know how stupid my neighbours are? This is how stupid my neighbours are. (Yesterday's weather in Tasmania was at severe alert level and bin day isn't until Tuesday). Anyway yes I'm turning into a middle aged curtain twitcher but in my defence they're clueless muppets.
An upended recycle bin with an open green waste bin next to it. This fell over within 20 minutes of it going out thanks to the 70km wind gusts we were having yesterday and half the recycling is now happily spread over the mess of their lawn that hasn't been mowed since June. Now while I realise the lawn these bins are on looks quite nice and clipped, what am I even talking about, this is because I mowed that bit, folks. And don't even get me started on how long they take to bring the bins back in. Or how often they've flooded my garden because they forget to turn hoses off. Or how many times they've broken various fences in and around my property because of the sheep they insist on keeping but won't properly look after. Or the time the idiot husband decided to set fire to his garden to get rid of the long grass and then didn't put it out properly. Or all the trees he's so far managed to kill. Or the time he tried to plant a row of leatherwood (rainforest species) by sticking a bunch of literal twig prunings in a paddock. Or his idiot children going round and round on their dirt bike in the same paddock right along my back fence while I'm trying to potter peacefully in my garden. Or the ever-expanding collection of caravans, boats, trailers and vehicles being parked right up against our boundary so that I'm now going to have to install extra screening so I don't have to see a literal parking lot. Or the time he yelled at/insulted me because he broke a fence post on a fence that was built by my father, at no cost to them, because he bolted a bloody great, insanely heavy gate onto the corner post and I was rightfully annoyed about it.
Anyway, where was I? Oh yes. Bins. The fucking bins.

Sometimes I'll have a bit of a wobble about being a sentient naked ape on a big rock hurtling through space, powered by a giant nuclear orb and living off the energy of fossilised sunlight, deliberately hurtling towards oblivion but then I'll have a cup of tea and a biscuit and it's not so bad.

Helping my parents thin out their 'books they never look at' collection by adding them to my collection (the last time this was cracked open was probably when I was poking through it as a kid, I definitely forgot how good it is and it probably influenced my aesthetic taste more than I realise).

I have one that regularly visits my garden. I get the impression that it has Disapproving Opinions About the State of It All
A Grey Goshawk (white morph) in my garden looking stern and probably tutting to itself about the unmown lawn but it has one feather out of place so can't exactly pass judgement.

As far as I remember it, life as a kid/student/young adult in a pre-internet, industrialised society was a lot of wandering around aimlessly until something interesting happened. Which was nice. Except for the times it occasionally wasn't. But mostly it was.

Most of my best recipes are just me starting with a base and rummaging through the fridge, freezer and pantry to find every possible complementary ingredient to add the mix. The better it tastes, the less likely I'll ever be able to replicate it again.

Libraries make us a harder target for authoritarianism. Equal access to info, ideas, and space that doesn’t require a purchase to belong. Also: using the library means money stays in your community instead of streaming out to Amazon. 📚 What’s checked out on your card right now?
