Where did their religions go? Elves all stopped believing?
No, the opposite. Elf scientists discovered the gods really existed. That explained why people kept bumping into them in grocery stores and the Department of Motor Vehicles, which previously seemed odd.
After that it was just too embarassing.
Worshipping gods is fine when you never meet them in a social context. But when you are standing in line with your god the next morning at the bank? What sort of conversation can you make?
"I prayed to you last night? I abase myself before you? Please grant me your magic?" And if that makes you cringe, imagine being the god.
I can't think of a thing more awkward!
Anyway, my great-great-grandparents always say it was never the same after Dr. Potato lost her medical license.
