England is seeing a "worrying increase" in young women in their 20s getting type 2 diabetes. Over 12,000 people under 30 now live with it, and women make up most cases. Some studies show the risk might increase after a COVID illness, but researchers note that the evidence isn't conclusive yet.🤦‍♂️
A screenshot of a BBC News article page under the Health category.
The headline reads:
"More young women in their 20s are getting type 2 diabetes"
Below the headline, the article byline states:
"5 days ago. Michelle Roberts, Digital health editor"
The main image features a close-up photograph of a person preparing to check their blood sugar. The person holds a white-and-grey lancing device against their index finger. On the wooden table below, a digital blood glucose monitor, a few test strips, and a small container of test strips are visible but slightly out of focus. Low case numbers don't mean low risk. COVID-19 is still circulating, and many people are finding that out the hard way. Worth a read. Source: x.com/1goodtern/st...
A screenshot of a social media post on X (formerly Twitter) by user tern (@1goodtern), dated 3:07 PM · Jul 26, 2026, with 25.9K views.
The text reads:
"I have seen several sad posts this week from people who stopped taking covid precautions because 'case levels are low', only to regret catching it almost instantly.
Case levels have remained low here, but Covid is in constant circulation, and may be on the rise again.
The reason there have been fewer cases for a while is that most people have temporary acquired immunity because they keep catching it every nine months to a year.
Keeping catching it is going to cause terrible health problems for some of them, so the temporary immunity isn't really a benefit.
But that lull gives the illusion that it's not around or a problem.
It is still around.
And it's only less of a problem at the societal level: smaller burden on emergency healthcare during lull, smaller burden of sick leave during lull.
It's still a problem for any individual that catches it.
As always: mask up folks."

An image showing a Western Australia COVID-19 surveillance report.
Above Figure 15, text states: "In the past week, the number of COVID-19 notifications to the Department of Health increased marginally to 120 notifications."
Figure 15 is a dual-axis chart tracking weekly data from January 2024 to May 2026. The left Y-axis measures notifications (0 to 1000) using blue vertical bars for PCR tests. The right Y-axis measures test positivity (0.0% to 20.0%) via a solid black line.
Major visual trends show:
•	2024 Peaks: Notifications and positivity peak in mid-2024, with cases hitting over 700 and positivity near 14.0%.
•	2025 Peaks: A secondary wave occurs in mid-2025, reaching over 600 notifications and 11.0% positivity.
•	2026 Baseline: Data drops significantly by early 2026. Weekly notifications remain low under 200, and test positivity hovers steadily between 1.0% and 3.0% through May 2026.
An image showing a Western Australia COVID-19 hospital metrics report.
The top text states: "In the past week, currently hospitalised COVID-19 cases decreased to 46 per day, while the 7-day average for cases currently in intensive care units remained at zero." It notes a recent hospitalisation uptick was mostly driven by long-stay patients.
Figure 16 is a stacked bar chart tracking the 7-day average of COVID-19 cases in WA from January 2024 to May 2026. The left Y-axis ranges from 0 to 250 cases. Blue segments represent standard hospitalisation, and orange segments show ICU care.
Key trends include:
•	Mid-2024 Peak: Hospitalisations top 220 cases daily, with noticeable orange ICU counts.
•	Mid-2025 Peak: Cases hit a lower wave peak around 160 per day.
•	Early 2026 Baseline: Metrics remain low through early 2026, averaging 20–30 daily cases, before a brief autumn spike to ~70 cases in May 2026 that quickly declines.
An image showing a Western Australia COVID-19 wastewater surveillance report.
The top text states: "The SARS-CoV-2 concentration in wastewater from the Perth metropolitan area decreased marginally, reflecting low-moderate COVID-19 activity in the community."
Figure 17 is a dual-axis line graph tracking data from February 2024 to June 5, 2026. The left Y-axis measures wastewater genome copies per 50mL (0 to 20,000) using a dark blue line. The right Y-axis tracks cases per 100,000 population (0 to 15) using a yellow line.
Key tracking trends:
•	Mid-2024 Peak: Wastewater viral loads spike significantly, peaking over 16,000 copies, closely mirrored by a yellow case rate peak near 4.
•	Mid-2025 Peak: A second wave peaks over 12,000 viral copies.
•	2026 Baseline: Metrics remain consistently low in 2026, with wastewater levels fluctuating under 4,000 copies and population case rates hovering near zero through June 2026.
An image of a dashboard tracking SARS-CoV-2 variant lineages in clinical and wastewater samples across the Perth Metropolitan area from December 14, 2025, to June 7, 2026.
The view filters for the Last 6 months and displays two stacked column charts tracking weekly percentage distribution (0% to 100% frequency):
•	Clinical samples: Features sparse data blocks through early 2026. By May and June 2026, the chart is heavily dominated by a light pink variant block, with a small presence of a salmon-pink variant appearing in late May.
•	Wastewater samples: Shows a continuous weekly breakdown with a highly diverse mix of variants in January and February. By May and June 2026, the landscape simplifies drastically, becoming overwhelmingly dominated by the same light pink variant seen in clinical samples.
A color-coded legend at the bottom maps out specific lineage codes, including various sub-lineages, recombinants, and newer classifications.
