Really chuffed about this. I’m so proud of these books, working with a brilliant team, Ben the writer, Helen the editor and Alison the designer. I hope this helps to bring them to a wider audience of 12+ children with a fascination for science.

🚨 I don't think this should surprise anyone - last year's average Antarctic sea ice extent was the lowest on record... Data averaged from January to December using nsidc.org/data/seaice_...
Animation of a moving line graph time series of annual mean Antarctic sea ice extent for each year from 1979 to 2023. There are no statistically significant long-term trends. 2023 is the lowest on record in this time series.

Pretty extraordinary that Al Jaber is now talking about oil as a low-carbon fuel, because extracted efficiently in the UAE with low leakage. Makes it sound even better than gas, which, as we all know, is a ‘transition fuel’. Really - what’s to worry about?

Line graph time series showing the global temperature anomalies for every September to November period from 1979 to 2023. There is interannual variability but a clear long-term increasing trend. 2023 is an outlier and the warmest on record in this time series. Anomalies are computed relative to a 1981-2010 baseline, and all data is from ERA5 reanalysis.

There's a deep sense of sadness and loneliness seeing this record shattering graph. November 17, 2023 was the first day in recorded history when the earth's surface was a whole 2°C hotter than pre-industrial times. Yet, there's barely any chatter about this staggering breach.

Oh, and if you want to see a diagramme of the trachea, here's one from this paper (left) www.nature.com/articles/19873. It's nto the strangest trachaea of any bird, which I think is probably won by the Trumpet Manucode, a bird of paradise with probably ever growing trachea (right).
A drawing of a whooper swan, showing the trachea in blue coming down the neck and doing a long loop all the ways through and around the sternum. Very odd.A weird diagramme of a bizarrely looped trachea on a bird of paradise, seeming to do 4 ish loops across the breast. There's a nice story about this beast here: https://nextgenerationbirders.blogspot.com/2014/01/obscure-bird-of-week-trumpet-manucode.html if you're looking for more info.
