New article out on the Cantophone 1840s–1920s for the language history crowd! (on the to-read pile) muse.jhu.edu/article/1000...
Language as Movement:
A Short History of the Cantophone, 1840s-1920s
Pang Laikwan - (bio)
ABSTRACT
This article explores how Cantonese speakers in the late Qing and early Republican periods traveled and connected with the world. It is a social and cultural study of the journeys and transformation of Cantonese, both as a people and as a language, in a new geopolitical and technological environment consisting of Western imperialism, Chinese nationalism, and individuals' enterprising efforts. I study how Cantonese reached Shanghai and Guangxi within China to interact with the languages and people in those places, and I also explore how it crossed the South Sea to British Malaya and the Pacific to Hawaii and the United States. I then follow the trajectories of study abroad students in Japan to witness how Cantonese left China and came back and in what ways the language participated in some of the most important political events of the time. This historical account offers an alternative view to understanding the life of a language, which in turn can help us understand the complex dynamics of language, power, and identity.

What doesn't always transpire in media coverage is how little disruptive it all is from a civilian's perspective Was out and about in Taipei the whole weekend and spotted just one guy in full camouflage gear in Da'an park The security lead-up to the 2024 olympics was more disruptive in Paris tbh

This, 1000x over. Writing in a second language is hard, we get it. Even in your first, I still have to google how many "p" are in "attraper" sometimes (one, it's one). But a PhD is about finding your own original voice as a researcher, so LLM-written emails make us doubt you'll ever do that.

Im so exhausted by this pattern. Historians spend years in the archives to write detailed accounts of the past. Only for journalists, doctors, podcasters, and now cartoonists, to swoop in and get paid a lot of money to trot out the same work, "uncovering hidden histories" that are not at all hidden.

The interesting question is not who uses Zotero or does not use Zotero. The interesting question is which academics enjoy working conditions that allow them to make scholarship central to their professional lives, and which academics have to do scholarship <in spite> of their working conditions.
