Statistical charts I've looked at in old Japanese sources really love scaled pictorial charts. I can't remember which source I found this from, but here we have 1935 global coffee consumption leaders. Sweden (7.75kg, I assume per year), Norway (6.95kg), and Denmark (6.9kg) in the lead.

Each intricate Kannon statue—now more than 800 years old—is carved from Japanese cypress and covered in gold leaf, details brought to life in the hand-colored photograph. French novelist Pierre Loti visited Sanjūsangen-dō in 1885, describing it as “the astonishment of astonishments.”

Am obvious security liability is the shrinkage of UK university teaching capacity and uptake of Chinese language and associated area studies expertise. The mooted new research security fund needs to address that (and not just re China) rather than only fixating on compliance.

May 1979. The great misperception. Young Maoists crowd around China’s leaders, unaware that the political world they believed in was already disappearing. Hua would fall; Hu Yaobang ( left) would help Deng dismantle the old order, then be sidelined himself in 1987. Deng remained and transformed China

Join us next weekend on Saturday, 26 September, for activities linked to the 2026 Medieval Faire. This is a free, drop in event between 11:00am and 4:00pm. You can find more information here: ow.ly/bmHw50ZMsNx 📸: St Christopher Woodcut, 1435-1450, Ref. JRL1200357.
Saint Christopher strides across a river. He holds a staff and carries the infant Christ, who blesses with his right hand and holds an Orb in his left. Hills form steep, jutting cliffs on either side of the river. A hermit kneels on the right, holding a lantern. On the left, one man rides a mule, carrying a sac; another climbs a steep road that ascends to a small house. Text along the bottom: "Cristofori faciem quacumque tueris Illa nempe die morte mala non morieris Millesimo cccc° xx° tertio".

The brutal reality of universities' suppression of wages (in KPMG's report for DfE on cost of undergraduate provision in England) assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/6aabfa...
Table 1 – Cost increases since the last study by cost type
Actual % increase
between 2016-17 and
2019 study cost groupings
2023-24 weighted
average unit cost
Staff costs 14%
Non-pay costs 46%
Indirect departmental costs -24%
Centrally allocated indirect costs 29%
Estates costs 40%
Sustainability adjustment -2%

Source: Analysis of Data Returns
Table 1 shows that costs have not increased equally in the time between the two costing studies. Non-pay costs have increased slightly ahead of inflation and estates costs have increased in line with inflation. Universities have managed staff costs significantly below inflation, increasing only by 14% compared to the 41.2% increase in RPIX. By contrast, indirect departmental costs have reduced by 24%, but this may be due to differences in the universities participating in the 2019 and this study. The movement in MSI is reflective of changes in financial performance rather than any inflationary impact.

#TaiwanArchives: 1945 Two dictators, Chiang Kai-shek and Mao Zedong, last met in Chongqing for post-war negotiations following their joint victory against Japan. The Double Tenth Agreement acknowledged the KMT as the legitimate government of China, and the CCP as a legitimate opposition party.
Held in Chongqing, China, from 29 August to 10 October 1945, the negotiations were highlighted by a meeting between CCP Chairman Mao Zedong and KMT Chairman Chiang Kai-shek, marking the first time the two leaders had met in 20 years. It would also be their final meeting.

The fallacy that University leaders pushing AI are falling into is thinking that the point of undergraduate research is to find things out. It isn't. What students find out is typically already generally known. The point of undergraduate research is to learn how to find things out.
