You can easily oppose the barbaric war crimes of the current Israeli government without backing this racist motion, which also takes away agency and the right of self-determination from everyone in the region, regardless of faith and background.

The "zionism is racism" motion that has just passed on the Green Party's conference floor is truly gross, and deeply racist. The party's MPs deserve some credit for opposing it, though they should've done so more stridently and sooner. This is now a millstone around the party's necks. Deservedly.

The Greens now have to explain why Zionism is bad yet other frequently irredentist nationalist ideologies in the region are OK That even Green MPs opposed haven't thought through where they'd end up on this is an indicator of how little these debates engaged with geopolitical dynamics on the ground

1/ In the coverage of far-right activist Danny Tommo's detention after slashing a migrant dinghy in the Channel, an important point seems to have been widely overlooked: he allegedly committed another crime *after* being arrested, which could result in 12 years in jail. ⬇️

The ability to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into a loss-making TV channel, bent on wrenching British politics sharply to the right, is yet another of the ways in which extreme wealth is trying to remake UK democracy. It needs to be part of any serious conversation about political funding.

Burnham has called for proportional representation. SV is absolutely not a proportional representation system. It is not clear if Burnham knows this but it is pretty certain that those appointed to an electoral reform commission charged with considering a move to PR will know this.

If the bulk of supposedly pro-European UK policy and political elites can't even make a positive case for UK membership of Schengen and the Euro to themselves, then the UK is better off limited to just Single Market access and a Customs Union.

I'd go further and argue Euro membership is an opportunity not a threat whether in trade, financial markets, or how UK personnel could come to shape the ECB. Building a sustainable outcome for the UK in the EU has to look beyond FoM and start engaging with how to integrate in Schengen and Euro

I'm less sure about Burnham's intentions and still think he hopes to find a way through the EU issue that isn't politically painful. But his team have heard the message that such a path isn't there, narrowing the choice to status quo (now ruled out), drop red lines, or rejoin.

Andy Burnham isn't a brilliant natural orator. He can be a bit woolly and rambling at times. But – and the obvious contrast here is Keir Starmer - it is very obvious what he believes in, and how strongly he believes in it, which can be very powerful, as here.
