Newsnight on Russia & AI risks: huge emphasis on AI guardrails (appropriately). No recognition that Russian risks might be mitigated by training Russian language speakers, skilled experts in Russian and East European studies (culture, history, politics). Is there an invisible elephant in the room?

The correct response to this would be to make all the evidence used to draw the conclusion public, then challenge Farage to respond, otherwise people will just pick their opinions on the matter based purely on who they trust.

When voters supported Brexit, we were told to respect their judgement - will of the people - and ignore the ‘experts’. Now voters are turning against Brexit, Robert Tombs talks about their gullibility and the influence of experts. Quite the turnaround.

Why on earth does this BBC piece on Burnham telling an interviewer the UK security services confirmed Russian interference in the Brexit referendum require a response from a pro Brexit pressure group? It's literally our Prime Minister telling us about election security. It's nothing to do with them.
The prime minister told The Rest is Politics podcast that upon arriving in No 10, he had asked about possible Russian interference in the 2016 vote, adding: "I've had the clear answer that, yes, there was."

"I think we've been too much on the back foot on that actually and we haven't informed people sufficiently about the extent to which people are seeking to disrupt the political process from overseas," he added.

Burnham did not provide further details about the type or extent of Moscow's activity during the Brexit referendum.

Britain Unbound, a pro-Brexit campaign group, said Burnham's comments were "another crude attempt to undermine the legitimacy of the decision that the British people made in 2016".

It said that foreign interference in UK elections was "obviously unacceptable" but added: "There is no good reason to believe that Russian intervention influenced the outcome of the referendum in 2016.

Mine: a partial devolution of work-related migration policy:
The Budget should give combined-authority mayors the power to create local work visas for recent university graduates, allowing them to retain international students and other young skilled workers.

The current system is excessively centralised. National salary thresholds and occupation rules take little account of differences in local labour markets, wage levels or growth strategies. A job paying £32,000 may be entirely viable and productive in Sheffield or Newcastle, even if it falls below a threshold designed around national or London wages, while the impact of new migrants on housing markets or local services will vary.

Mayors should therefore be allowed to sponsor a limited number of recent graduates who have studied in the UK, have a job offer in their region and meet locally determined salary or skills criteria. Visas could initially be tied to employment within the relevant combined authority, with a route into the national Skilled Worker system after two or three years.

Also obvious and often forgotten: underlying maths here changed. A lot of people still analyse politics of Brexit as if the split in the public is still 52/48, with leave both an overall majority and more efficiently spread, with most seats majority Leave. None of that true now
