I have no love for Twitter, but one thing that Bluesky is vastly inferior on is the discovery feed algorithm. Pre-musk twitter, the algo knew I liked politics news and regularly exposed me to new accounts to follow. This week Bluesky’s Discover thinks I like the /concept/ of food.

We've been getting a lot of questions about how the Internet Archive digitizes books. The short answer: page by page, by hand. You may remember our viral 2021 video of Eliza Zhang scanning a book. That's still how we do it. Meet Eliza, and learn how we scan books: blog.archive.org/2021/02/09/m...

For those unaware, this gets you the single most efficient air filter design possible. Duct Tape isn’t the best at keeping things airtight though, so I’d choose something made for a tight seal if you can. You probably want a cheaper fan for this because you’re putting extra strain on it.

My going general theory (doesn’t feel like it’s true where I work now) is that remaining workers are valued specifically on - role flexibility - ease of exploitation - energy reserves Good employees who were already nearing burnout often go because they’re assumed to be used up. No time to rest.

I had someone offhandedly mention they read an article about picking your nose lowering your IQ… While I’m sure you should not do that, I’m more sure that the lack of preventive care and screening and increasing heavy metals in the food supply is doing a lot more than the Fad Health Thing.

I have this rapidly solidifying suspicion that part of the reason we’re seeing an uptick of conservatism from people under 25 is that, in addition to…everything else going on, they got a lot more childhood lead than people now in their 30s did.

Whenever I try to explain this to people who call themselves designers, I get a blank stare. But if you don't understand how your product mediates behavior, you should not be doing this job.

Articles like this fill me with the desire to create an account like JustSaysInMice that responds to the article name with “Yes, but this is clearly a scam.” If we could dialyze the plastic out of your blood for that cost we would have done that already.

I’ve never had a favorite bug before; now I do. The Picasso Bug
Four photo panels showing an Sphaerocoris annulus aka the Picasso bug. A beautiful multi-colored shield-backed bug

Sphaerocoris annulus can reach a length of about 15 millimetres (0.59 in).[2][3] The basic color is green, with eleven ring-shaped spots on the scutellum. The colors and the design of these bugs represent a warning to predators. They also emit a noxious odour when disturbed. Main host plants are Gossypium species (Malvaceae), Coffea arabica (Rubiaceae), Citrus species (Rutaceae) and Vernonia amygdalina (Asteraceae).[4] This species reproduces at the beginning of the dry season (November–December). Eggs are laid on the underside of leaves, and nymphs will spend a majority of their time in flowers feeding. Once they molt into adults, however, their feeding becomes more generalized. The full development lasts 56 days.[5][6] Sphaerocoris annulus nymphs are a creamy-white color with black stripes and dots, and gain their colorful spots when they reach maturity. [2]

If you’re doing your work properly, you’ll do it at least 2.5 times. The first time you build a document, project, character, sound, whatever it may be, it won’t be great. You’ll probably restart from scratch. The second version, it’s better, but you have to re-iterate half of it. This is normal.

I feel like American companies have gotten especially bad about their markets meeting maturity. Sometimes your margins shrink! Sometimes you gotta put more effort into each sale! It’s okay! You do not need to start selling your commuter rail lines just because freight is doing 2% better this year.

Part of a mistake like this might just be foolishness but, depending on the org, there’s a risk to the salesperson. If you spend time and it flops, you get punished for wasting time. If you pass on it and it succeeds, you get punished for being inefficient. It’s bad incentivizing. Let people make $!
