Elite impunity is perhaps the single greatest problem in American politics going back to Gerald Ford’s Watergate pardons. These people keep getting away with it. This needs to stop.

The president threatening the entire nation of Norway because it didn’t give him a prize he wanted? A prize for peace, when he literally started a war that destabilized the world economy? A prize he thinks he deserves for WINNING wars (that he didn’t even actually win)?

In 1987 Pat Buchanan astutely remarked that "the greatest vacuum in American politics is to the right of Ronald Reagan." That is where the GOP now is. So let’s see where they’re headed…i.e. towards the abyss to the right of Trump. Take Jesse Kelley’s respect for Trump’s “restraint” as an example.

I sympathize and admire Trump's restraint. He's a man with reverence for the office and he wants things to return to normal. He believes his good conduct can help that along.
He's dead wrong, of course. Communists only understand fear and pain.
But still, I admire it.

It’s true that American conservatives rarely said positive things about Franco in public until the Trump era, but it’s also worth noting that Bill Buckley’s debate partner, co-author, and brother in law moved to Franco’s Spain because he loved it so much. bsky.app/profile/seth...

This dynamic where the GOP just keeps moving steadily rightward into the abyss (what Rick Perlstein has called “the authoritarian ratchet”) has been at work for many decades now and shows no signs of abating. bsky.app/profile/seth...

You're asking Trump to be Francisco Franco and that's like asking a 10 year old to strike out Aaron

Franco comes later. Trump is the beginning. Not the end. Accept him for what he is. He's been valuable getting the ball rolling.

It's not hard. Both Yglesias moderates and Khanna leftists give MAGA politicians legitimacy because they want MAGA's base. Ossoff simply does not give a shit about the MAGA base, which allows him to speak with fierce clarity about MAGA politicians. He is willing to bet on an anti-MAGA majority.

Pundit overread of 2024 as the birth of a multiracial working class movement anchored around right wing nationalism was disastrous for this country. It helped encourage lots of elite capitulation and caused libs/Dems to trim their sails. If this election buries that myth there should be a reckoning.

Statement by President of Russia Vladimir Putin
October 9, 202622:50
During the October 9 telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump, considerable focus was on prospects for settling the Ukraine crisis, while the situation surrounding Iran and various aspects of bilateral relations were touched upon as well.

When discussing the state of affairs in the global energy market, the Russian side confirmed its willingness to supply oil and petroleum products to the US market and global markets at large. I am convinced this will have a positive impact on the entire global economy.

An agreement was reaffirmed to maintain personal contacts between the presidents of the two countries and to continue cooperation across their respective administrations, security services, and agencies.

Team Trump’s Putin sympathy and hope to see Russia’s aggression succeed has always been apparent. But now that it’s this explicit, lifting sanctions (illegally) and begging Ukraine to stop hitting Russian refineries (because it’s working) could the press finally stop calling their efforts “peace”?

Trump’s plan to save the midterms is…help Russia. The Trump-Vance-Kushner-Witkoff approach to the war has always been weaken Ukraine so they bow down to Putin. It hasn’t worked. With nearly two years of this, Ukraine has shown it can thwart ground offensives and strike Russian oil without US help.

I'd be curious to see what happens immediately before that video; I wish the NYPD had made that public as well. But I have to say... on initial view, that looks indistinguishable from a carjacking, and if I'd been the driver I would also probably have floored it.
