I remember John Ganz slagging off DSA a few years ago for having masking at their national convention. What a little bitch

This seems like a pretty big deal: donors made illegal contributions to Susan Collins and then were awarded lucrative contracts after her office intervened with the Navy. An FBI investigation was dropped under Trump. www.propublica.org/article/fbi-...
To skirt campaign finance laws and conceal the source of the funds, Navatek planned to funnel the donation through a shell company. The CEO wanted assurance that Collins would know where
the money came from. Reed confirmed that she would, the executive said - and that Navatek would get its government contracts.
After the Corner Bakery meeting, Navatek's CEO, Martin Kao, sent an initial $150,000 to the Collins super PAC using the shell company. Two months later, he told Navatek executives that Collins committed to getting the company $32 million in naval contracts, according to an internal company email reviewed by ProPublica.

“People got sick because the leaders they trusted lied and told them they were safe to breathe in toxic air, and then when they began to contend with the symptoms of the illness that followed, the government that had not hesitated to send them into harm's way was nowhere to be found.”

It takes you 20 paragraphs to get to the part of the article where they admit that Mamdani isn't paying the influencers and the reason they are posting videos of the stuff Mamdani is doing is because people are interested in watching it.
The mayor’s office says that it does not pay the influencers. Still, their proximity and access to a figure as popular as Mr. Mamdani can help increase their own social media following and, by extension, potentially put them in a position to attract paid content sponsorships from commercial brands. Some influencers said that when they feature Mr. Mamdani, the videos get more likes and viewers watch longer.

BREAKING: The union of Starbucks workers is officially calling for a boycott of the chain. @sbworkersunited.org has over 12,000 unionized baristas, and they're calling on customers to stop visiting Starbucks until they get a fair union contract.

It is tempting to buy equipment for a hobby when what you want is time, commitment, or companionship for the hobby, which buying equipment doesn't give you. It does however let you buy the identity of the hobby.

Given the US government has spent the entire 21st century engaged in multiple largely pointless interventionist wars at great human cost, I think the people who continue to advocate for intervention should face a higher level of scrutiny than those who argue against it.

you have to read the elite panic over DSA as a function of the fact that basically any quasi-functional chapter of DSA can out-organize the establishment primarily because basically so much of American civil society has gone from mass-moblization to management (DSA is a return to mass mobilization)

One more time: this is not an assessment of Platner, this is an assessment of the insanity and denialism of too-online libs who for an entire year and even now continue to believe they can decide an election by social media posting. It just… Doesn’t work that way!

This is one of the many, many (sigh. MANY) problems I’v noted with Bluesky commentariat all year: this weird belief that Platner cast a spell on the voters who had no agency in their opinions. Why won’t Dems commit to a replacement candidate who supports M4A and not funding Israel? We know why.

Yes. But: Platner ran a populist campaign, which makes separating him from its supporters difficult. The solution would be to embrace Platner’s (ergo his supporters’) positions as the clear will of the voters but the problem of course is the Democratic establishment doesn’t actually support them.

I’m specifically thinking of the Valdez vs Reynoso race. It was an open seat! To replace someone who’ll have been in the House for 34 years! Whether you prefer Valdez or Reynoso, the idea that it’d be ‘disrespectful’ to refuse the seat to any specific person, whoever that is, is baffling.

A lot of discourse since Tuesday hinges on idea that some politicians are owed a seat, it’s their turn & it’s problematic to not back them. & that’s so odd to me — because not only you have to wait for 88-year olds to deign to retire, but then there’s someone else waiting who’s owed & you can’t run?

I think the stabbing had put Nowak in such a condition as to appear to be one of the many kinds of "undesirables" police are empowered to treat inhumanely and it's only after the fact when it's been discovered that he was in that state because of the stabbing that anyone even questions that reflex.

They do it to homeless people, people in drug and alcohol crisis, they do it to people with speech or cognitive impairments who they misconstrue as affected by substance use. Police routinely fail to recognise vulnerability and medical risk on a systematic basis.
