Speaking as an AE at two different journals, all of this is 100% correct. Previous benchmarks for publication cycles are utterly irrelevant now, b/c it takes 3-5x as long to attach reviewers and obtain review (I completely u-stand why people won't review). The entire ecosystem is broken.

AI teaching for today: www.nytimes.com/2026/09/29/o.... The author's approach makes sense: students write an essay followed by a 45 minute oral discussion. But he teaches small seminars at Williams College, whereas most professors teach 30-200+ lectures. The solution is a structural non-starter.

If you want to argue on those grounds, make the point that extramural funding loses money everywhere. Institutional funding - from tuition - is what pays for science research. At the top 50 R1s institutional cross subsidy is between 25-35% generally.

Daniel S. Goldberg @profgoldberg.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
This is in some sense even a bigger problem for humanities scholars on health sciences campuses, because the only kind of research that "counts" is extramurally unfunded - which is generally NOT available for humanities scholars anyway because NO ONE FUNDS IT.

Okay, you want more majors. But everyone knows that to do that you need small classes. And if you want small classes where students learn the content of humanities research knowledge and the methods of producing it, you need to hire more faculty and give them the resources to engage in research.
