I’m embarrassed to admit that until a few years back when I was asked to be an outside reviewer of an application for a European funder, it had never occurred to me that it was even possible anywhere for a humanities project to get six- or seven-figure public funding.

Not to join the pile-on, but <5 weeks before the midterms, Inside Election has GA-Sen at Tilt D, AK-Sen At Tilt R, PA-7 at tossup, OH-9 at Tilt R, OH-Gov at Tilt R, AK-Gov at Lean R, etc., etc. I kind of want to subscribe to learn their logic, but I also wouldn’t pay a site with those ratings.

I miss election twitter of old because: 1) these polls seem too good to be true and I’d like some insight into them; 2) people on this platform tend either to untethered optimism or doom; 3) the other place is just as bad with conservatives’ untethered optimism.

I think a lot of us were moving in a direction like this until the biggest companies in the world poured trillions of dollars into marketing plagiarism robots to our students and now many of us feel like we don't have a choice but to make students physically do the work in front of our eyes

It doesn’t need to translate in to “broad support for Democrats,” that’s a dumb standard. If white rural areas just go back to how they voted in 2012—counties going 58-38 Repub instead of 71-27 Repub—a lot of Repubs will be wiped out.

1. The MI and NH numbers are a relief, esp. from NYT/Siena. 2. ME is concerning, but I’ve long believed that the apt comparison is to RI in 2006: when the rubber meets the road, whatever affinity voters have for Collins will be outweighed by a desire for a D majority (though not by RI margins!).

For all the emphasis on Hamilton’s progressive Christianity, I think the far bigger deal—and bigger reason for his success—is good old-fashioned mainline institutionalism. He’s the pastor of a really big church and is an important person in the denomination.

2006 I managed a Congressional campaign in NH. One of our biggest challenges was the pessimism, because all but 4 years it had been Republican for a century. Other than 2 years it’s been Dem ever since. Places remain impregnable to one of the parties until they aren’t.

Lists like this remind me of someone who doesn’t even rise to the level of “supporting character” but who I find fascinating: Chief Brossmer in “The Next Phase.” She’s the epitome of the middle-aged competent professional who just did her job in Starfleet. I wish we learned more about these folks.

It was obvious as early as March or April of 2025 that the right had gotten high on its own supply, and that the media, corporate leaders, and national Democrat leaders were hotboxing right along with them. What we couldn’t see clearly until a few months later was that the general public wasn’t.

I keep seeing posts about how much students hate AI, and I think that’s true—but it also misses that, from what I’m seeing, many of those same students continue to use AI all the time. The kids may be alright, but the solution isn’t as simple as institutions telling them they don’t need to use it.

I think this is right, but as someone trying to be that professor this semester, it‘s even harder than I expected. The tech is so deeply integrated that even students who wish they weren’t using it are constantly drawn to it.
