I was deputy M.E. at the WSJ when Murdoch took over, with a similar “editorial independence board.” Within 4 months, our top editor was gone, replaced by a loyal Murdoch deputy. That board raised a quivering objection, but the deed was done. If the Ellisons own CNN, they’ll do whatever they want.

The system was super broken and a global outlier before the ACA “Obamacare” and remains a global aberration today. In the wealthy world, only the U.S. clings to an empirically poor ROI system: highest costs & lowest returns on health outcomes.

Extremely important story. Predictive policing is a euphemistic way of saying DHS is doing pre-crime, because of its improper access to your data. As @jakelaperruque.bsky.social says here, this takes a sledgehammer to the concept of probable cause of the commission of a crime. It can’t be reformed.

It's increasing clear the primary uses of our surveillance state are not to prevent crime or to track down criminals, but to engage in criminal activity. Nothing about that should be surprising given the elaborate legal structures we have in place to create a culture of impunity in law enforcement.
