I'd rather ride my bike to get places. Becoming more involved so others can too. Also, maybe some sports stuff.

We've spent a ton of time talking about teens getting injured on e-bikes (or illegal e-motos). We've heard that crash rates are skyrocketing. Marin County Dept of Health even set up a dashboard to see how many e-bike/e-moto crashes are happening. But how many kids are getting hurt *in cars*? 🧵

@bikeeastbay.bsky.social Comms Manager Chelsey came up with this inspired graphic explaining the upcoming Richmond-San Rafael Bridge Trail closures, to make space for a car breakdown shoulder every week for the next 3 years starting Oct 27th. More info: BikeEastBay.org/RSR
"ATTENTION
WE HAVE REDUCED PUBLIC ACCESS TO THIS ESSENTIAL CONNECTION, IN ORDER TO PRIORITIZE CARS AND THEIR DISRUPTIVE AND FREQUENT BREAKDOWNS. IF HAVING FREEDOM TO MOVE MATTERS TO YOU, PLEASE ONLY RIDE YOUR BIKE DURING THE DESIGNATED POSTED HOURS.

MON - WE ANTICIPATE CAR CRASHES
TUE -MORE CAR LANES = MORE CARS ON THE ROAD = WHAT COULD GO WRONG
WED - THE BRIDGE ISN'T BIG ENOUGH FOR PEOPLE ON BIKES, TOO
THU - NOBODY BIKES TO WORK ANYWAY; 2PM BIKE LANE OPEN
FRI - BIKE LANE OPEN
SAT - BIKE LANE OPEN
SUN - BIKE LANE OPEN; 11 PM CLOSED"

So… The Bay Area Council’s “rally” to close the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge trail is being held in the middle of the freeway, only accessible by car. That basically says it all. Tons of public resources being used for this event today. How is this legal?

UPDATE: The April 3rd Richmond-San Rafael Bridge trail vote is postponed again, this time indefinitely. Below is the info from the BCDC meeting agenda. This delay is good news, likely a result of all the folks who wrote in and expressed their concerns about the trail closure proposal. Thank you!
"POSTPONED
Caltrans has requested BCDC postpone the Commission's scheduled public hearing and vote on Caltrans' Richmond-San Rafael Bridge permit application, which was set for Thursday, April 3, 2025. Caltrans plans to amend its permit application, and BCDC looks forward to considering an amended project that we expect will provide additional potential transportation benefits and maximum feasible public access consistent with that project. See Attachment B for more information."

According to the Marin Museum of Bicycling, Owen Mulholland (RIP) is the reason we can bike across the Golden Gate Bridge during the week. From the article: "Philosophically, I'm opposed to the point of view that cars are the only viable means of transportation."
Newspaper clipping:
Bicyclist vs the Bridge.

Owen Mulholland, 24, a veteran bicycle racer, was given a $15 traffic cidation on September 16 for riding ont he east pedestrian walk of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Today, at 8 AM, Mulholland expects to take the samer route from his home in San Francisco to the Marin civic center to answer the summons.
Mulholland, who is president of the San Francisco Wheelman, a bicycle racing club, said his bicycle is his only means of transportation.
Although the bridge allows bicycling on its west pedestrian walk on the weekends, it provides no bicycle route on week days.
"I've long felt this is an unnecessary discrimination against bicycle riders," Mulholland said, "and I've chosen to ignore the rule against ike riding ont he east walkay while being fully are of the consequences."
Mulholland said he plans to bicycle to the Marin civic center today "rain or shine" and hopes to appear at the traffic court promptly at 9 AM when it opens.
"Philosophically," he said, "I'm opposed to the point of view that cars are the only viable means of transportation."

Photo of San Francisco City's Away Jersey in collaboration with Idle Worship. An indigo jersey with denim features and sashiko patterns.detail shots of the jersey with copy that reads: We teamed up with local brand Idle Worship to reimagine the iconic 1994 USMNT "Denim" kit. As San Francisco is the birthplace of the world’s biggest denim brand, it was a matter of time before the community-owned, -operated, and -focused club told that story through the lens of a jersey.A close up of the right sleeve with Idle Worship's logo. Copy reads: Custom sashiko patterns designed by Paolo Cui at Idle Worship, drawing inspiration from the ancient Japanese stitching technique. The sublimated stitches create a trompe-l'œil effect, giving the illusion of texture on the fabric.

Chainlink patterns cover the front, while “dots” accent the sleeves. The back showcases a high-resolution scan of vintage linen provided by Idle Worship. Copper stitching throughout pays homage to classic denim jeans, while the club’s badge is recolored to mimic the iconic back patches found on them. Knitted collar and cuffs feature a red dotted line, reminiscent of selvedge jeans.A photo of the back of the jersey which features the Peace Pagoda found in San Francisco's Japantown with "SF City" underneath, across the top.

Last fall, I was tired of hearing that support for bikes came from a narrow minority of Berkeley, so I commissioned a poll to ask how broad support is here. The answer is that the vast majority of the city, 73%—and even a majority of people who do not bike—support adding more bike infrastructure.
A pie chart showing that 73% of poll respondents support expanding bike infrastructure in Berkeley.A chart showing that 91% of respondents want off-street paths, 86% want concrete-protected bike lanes, and 74% want parking-protected bike lanes. Posts or paint are not enough.
