I fully believe that this is Wayne's culture, because it's recognizably lower class white culture of the kind that JD Vance correctly excoriated in Hillbilly Elegy. However, it's not American culture or even PMC white culture. It's just hick culture.

It seems unlikely that a BBC editor who e.g. made a film that “accidentally” accused Tory staff of screaming “Hitler was right” at colleagues and later quietly clarified this wasn’t correct, in an election year, would ever work in current affairs again.

Our built infrastructure robs kids of their freedom of independent mobility. Streets are dominated by oversized vehicles, piloted by aggressive and distracted drivers where one mistake can turn lethal. We sacrificed child development to subsidize the auto industry.

the other thing is that this is a totally incoherent and arbitrary standard for deciding who has rights and who doesn't. you could say the same, for instance, of alito's vision of inviolate "religious liberty" or expansive gun rights.

In case anybody would like an example as to why I don't currently regret having left Perú, even if I do miss my life there. The election authority's page literally doesn't let you see results for the current regional/local elections unless you're in Perú. What the actual fuck. What great democracy.
A screenshot of the Peruvian election authority's (ONPE) website, saying "Podrás acceder a los resultados únicamente desde Perú" ("You can only access the election results from within Peru.")

One of my favorite things when the left wins an election in Chile is the man on the street interviews with "anticommunists" whose last names include at least one German one, almost surely coming from family who arrived there between 1945 and 1949 with dubious documents.

It’s interesting how the standard bearer for the party whose message used to be “Democrats suck because they just buy votes by giving people free stuff” has decided the closing message for the midterms will just be “how many more checks do we have to send you in order to earn your vote?”

So, this very sympathetic piece where the subject is “a lifelong Democrat who had voted for Trump for the first time in 2024”. 5 minutes of checking his facebook shows pro Trump posts as far back as 2019, and a post saying that he “stands with Trump” posted just a couple of days after Trumps coup.

Peru's current democracy has been going for about 25 years now, and the last 10 have amounted to increasingly handing over control to the exact people in charge of the last dictatorship. And as everything's gotten worse, mass media has just increasingly attacked the half that thinks this is bad.

and honestly, losing either statewide race in texas is something close to a strategic defeat. it completely upsets the political map going forward. it would be similar to trump winning new jersey in 2024 (where he came close).

yeah, the reason republicans are just not going to budge from texas is the reason why armies try not to abandon their capitals. it isn’t necessarily a strategic defeat to lose the seat of power, but it is a profound blow to morale.
