Very similar thoughts to my own (written a few years ago, thanks FB memories)

I miss the feeling of not being at war. Do you remember how that felt? I don't mean the quagmire in Afghanistan or the inexcusable folly in Iraq—I mean the never-ending exhortations that all of us, the public, everyone, constantly have to be vigilant, phrased in the language of combat. I miss when fire fighters and police were there as civilian public servants, not as paramilitary first responders to enemy attack.
I miss the optimism, too. It's ironic that Gen X, widely derided as cynical slackers, is perhaps the last generation to come of age in a time where hope made sense. Balanced budgets, the end of the Cold War...sure, we had a taste of the right wing "populist" fever dream that has since grown so large across the world, and the ethnic and sectarian divisions that bloom like mushrooms when totalitarian control suddenly goes away. But I miss a time when it still felt possible that we could get past that, that the largest dragons were dead and the snakes were dangerous but manageable.
I miss the people we lost that day, and all the days since, here and overseas in the relentless conflicts that followed. It's not fair they had to die. They should all still be with us, and their families, and the people that loved them.
It's selfish, maybe, to talk about the world we lost rather than to talk first and foremost about the sacrifices so many have made-god knows many have sacrificed far more than I ever had to. But it's also important to remember the true cost of that attack; it wrecked our innocence, our naiveté, our feeling of safety, and it pushed us onto a dark path toward an uncertain future.
