call for proposals

Queer Bibliography
TAKING STOCK
Manchester, UK and online
2-4 September 2027

details overleaf ❧ ❧ ❧call for proposals

Taking Stock marks the fifth annual Queer Bibliography conference and is a chance to pause and reflect and to queerly attend to the many meanings of “stock” in bibliography.

Where do we find ourselves and our work?
How might we trace queer histories of queer bibliography? How can we imagine critical futures for bibliographical enquiry within and beyond its traditional academic locations?
From the raw materials of books to the origins and shapes of personal, commercial, and institutional collections, how does "stock" participate in the production, articulation, and study of queer textuality and textual communities?
What is queer about materiality, the ecology of books, and the processes of making and engaging with (collections of) physical textual objects?

We invite participants to engage in stock-taking or to reflect on bibliographical stock, broadly defined. We welcome meta, theoretical, and historiographical work that takes stock of queer bibliography, and we welcome proposals that relate to “stock” in bibliography, book history, and reception studies.

❧ abstracts due 29 January ☙

London bus priority seats are for disabled people, pregnant people, people who are less able to stand, middle-aged blokes who had a big night last night and could do with the sit down, and shopping trollies.

How do you show a whole digitized book in one thumbnail? Modern books have illustrated covers, but in research collections the cover is often a plain library binding. So I made Flipbook: hover over a book from any #IIIF source and flip through its pages. hadro.github.io/flipbook/ #GLAMsky 📚📜

Like, this isn’t (just) the snark of a guy who reads a lot of early modern philosophy for research purposes and works with academic philosophers. I’m genuinely interested in this. why is the dominant language this sort of cyber-Benthamism?

i mean, there’s loads to talk about on the subject of rationalism / effective atruism / AI alignment / the San Fran cult scene, but when these guys throw around titles like “greatest philosopher”, I get really interested in how much philosophy these guys read and how they read it

The first big exhibition of comics in the UK began at London’s ICA in Dec 1970. It was discussed not just in comics fanzines & the undergrounds, but in the “quality” press like The Guardian & The Times. I’ve seen few pics of it, so I was chuffed to find these Henry Grant photos at the London Museum.

It's just weird isn't it when the British Museum is running a sold-out exhibition, when The Odyssey reports $1billion at the box office, when the V&A has just opened the most innovative and accessible museum model in Europe....and this is what our minister for research comes out with.

No, I just mean I’m just glad that definition leaves out Suffolk, Norfolk, and the preferable bits of Cambridgeshire from its definition of the south of England. The east has its own problems, god alone knows, but it’s not in the south.

When asked in the Q&A about arts and humanities he says he personally values them (seems very genuine) but that he is the Science Minister, and it’s for the DCMS Minister to make the case for those. He’s perhaps not yet clocked he is responsible for all R&D. Would Wissenschaft Minister work better?

Always delightful when events and our thin-skinned free-thinkers give me an excuse to post a Osbert Lancaster cartoon.
An interminable moaning tweet suggesting that The Athenaeum has been captured by Trots (in this case, the husband of a former Conservative PM) on their long march through the institutions, on the grounds they don’t want Nigel Biggar to give a talk there. An Osbert Lancaster pocket cartoon from the Daily Express, 29 January 1951. Three CofE clerics are leaving the Athenaeum, one of whom looks intent
on kicking another down the front steps. Caption reads “Have a care, Fontwater — we’re not in White’s!”

at my school, a friend decided to kick a lamppost in front of the photographers from the local paper, thinking it would be a funny contrast. He broke two toes, and spent the rest of the day in A&E at West Suffolk Hospital with a man who had a dart embedded in his forehead.

A relief that someone else has pointed this out. Also true that libraries throw away or recycle many, many books, including rare ones. This is not intended as a defence of AI companies, but just a recognition that books are routinely treated as much less sacrosanct than book-lovers might assume.

You don’t say, Bridget. Too bad this is a realisation you could only come to when you experienced it yourself. There are entire disciplines dedicated to understanding those human experiences so we don’t, each, have to live through them before recognising them. But they got decimated on your watch.

I‘ve spent quite a bit of the weekend wondering whether this was connected to the row when Lisa Jardine pointed out Larkin‘s misogyny. But it must be just before, I think, some time between Lisa leaving Cambridge and the Letters being published.
