I'm not even suggesting that we stop using these technologies. What I am saying is that we need to start getting comfortable telling the dipshit, rent-thirsty wannabe oligarchs "No thanks, we're good." We need leaders and representatives who will tell them "Nah, not interested."

I get that it would be a real loss for many people, and that it would be a hassle for virtually everyone, but as a society we need to remember that all of this tech stuff is optional. It doesn't need to come at the cost of the stuff we care about, like health care and social justice.

One of the best parts about coming of age before the internet is being 100% confident that we don't need any of this shit. Not just AI, crypto, IoT and streaming media, or even social media and smartphones. Email? Don't need it. Online retail? Nah. Websites? Meh. We can just stop this at any time

The fix is to hold AI companies criminally liable for the damage their products do. If OpenAI made blenders that occasionally exploded into shrapnel, they'd be found criminally negligent. They could be sued for obvious harm. This WILL happen to AI companies eventually. That's the fix. Accountability

The issue is that OpenAI's own people didn't bother to check the permissions they'd given the agents, or spend a few minutes thinking through how the permissons allowed could be adapted and misused. In other words, OpenAI's bad computer science allowed their agents to "escape" conditions ...
