Susan La Flesche Picotte: the first #NativeAmerican woman to earn a medical degree in the US. Living in an era when Native Americans were denied citizenship & women couldn't vote, she became an indispensable physician & fierce defender of her people's sovereignty. Died #OTD in 1915. #WomenInSTEM 🧵
A black-and-white studio portrait of Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte (1865–1915), the historic reformer celebrated as the first Native American woman to earn a medical degree in the United States. In a bust-up composition against a dark, textured backdrop, she is positioned slightly turned to the side while facing the camera directly. She looks forward with an intelligent, steady, and composed expression, her dark hair neatly swept up away from her face into a soft bun. She wears a Victorian-era garment featuring a high-necked collar made of a contrasting, intricately patterned light fabric with fine floral or geometric motifs. This collared section is framed by a square, dark lace trim on her darker, structured bodice, which has modest pleating and slight puffing at the shoulders. The soft studio lighting emphasizes her prominent cheekbones and the calm, dignified mood of the portrait, embodying her historic legacy as an enduring pioneer of Indigenous health and civil rights.

Poem of Gilgameš. Electronic Babylonian Library. Enjoy! www.ebl.lmu.de/corpus/L/1/4...
Gilgameš so tall, perfect and terrible,
who opened passes in the mountains;
who dug wells on the hill-flanks,
and crossed the ocean, the wide sea, as far as the sunrise;
who scoured the world-regions ever searching for life,
and reached by his strength Ūta-napišti the Far-Away;
who restored the cult-centres that the Deluge destroyed,
and established the proper rites for the human race!

Behind us, Glencoe of the Slaughter, Achnacone, field of dogs, Achtriachan, where the water-bull lurks among thin fish tickled by weed, and the Great Herdsman of Etive over us like a black axe… —Alison Fell, “Rannoch Moor” in The Edinburgh Book of 20th-Century Scottish Poetry (EUP, 2005) #poem
Rannoch Moor
Alison Fell

Behind us, Glencoe of the Slaughter,
Achnacone, field of dogs,
Achtriachan, where the water-bull
lurks among thin fish tickled by weed,
and the Great Herdsman of Etive
over us like a black axe

To pace the moor, and mark it,
like a cat bruises the grass
for its bed,
or be claimed instead –
scars of burnt heather, dead
weariness, the sheep paths
misleading, and the bogs
pitted with white water

Slow steps mark the line
on the moor sour with struggle,
where darkness is brought to the brim,
and the bog-cotton bursts
like puffs of smoke
after a musket,
and the broken bleached roots
of the old forest
are white bones under
the petrol shimmer of methane

Slow march in the whine
of telegraph wires,
while the wind chops
at my breath,
and the peat mud sticks to my feet
like rafts

This is my new account, would love a follow here!! Join us Thursdays at #humansofBluesky. Urban scale meets color punch. A lone walker in vibrant magenta crosses North Wabash Ave, dwarfed by Chicago's towering skyscrapers. #luiscordobapharchive #street #Chicago #EWackerDrive #NWabashAv
Vertical orientation street photograph titled "The Wayfarer, Making His Own Path — North Wabash Avenue, Chicago." Low-angle perspective looking south along North Wabash Avenue near East Wacker Drive. In the foreground, a lone walker in a bright magenta sweater and light trousers crosses a painted pedestrian crosswalk. The framing showcases a rich array of historic and modern Chicago architectural landmarks:

* On the right foreground stands 330 North Wabash (formerly the IBM Building / AMA Plaza), the iconic 52-story International Style dark steel-and-glass skyscraper designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (housing The Langham Hotel in its lower levels).
* Adjacent to it on the right is the historic LondonHouse Chicago building (85 E Wacker Dr) with its classical stone facade.
* Down the avenue background, visible signage marks the historic L7 Chicago by Lotte (formerly Kimpton Hotel Monaco Chicago at 225 N Wabash Ave).
* In the distant skyline background to the left, the blue reflective glass of the St. Regis Chicago tower rises into a deep, clear sky.

Optimized for Chicago street photography, North Wabash Avenue, IBM Building Mies van der Rohe, LondonHouse Chicago, Hotel Monaco L7 Chicago, St Regis Chicago skyline, architectural scale, color pop street portrait, and Chicago Loop cityscape indexing.
