My friend asking me the hard questions - asked what one of the most profound losses was that I was not sure how to navigate.
There have been many. I'll share that life throws so many things at you that you're never prepared for. The first was divorcing.
Divorcing my best friend, someone I loved and still considered my friend, is almost impossible to put into words. We were so young when we married, and still fairly young when we parted, 17 3/4 years later. I had regrets, anxiety, loss, and I didn't truly process any of it for almost five years. The 2nd profound loss in adulthood was losing my cousin to breast cancer. My cousin Fay was one of those people everyone loved. Full of life, love, laughter. She could love you and give you a good old-fashioned zinger if you needed it. A year before she died, I had lunch with her near Atlanta. I had gone through a breakup and was feeling very low.
I was moving back to the West Coast. She put her hand on mine and said, "Ali baby, you need to fight for your life." She was fighting for her life and helping me fight for mine. We hugged, and I got on the airplane
— that was the last time I saw her. But I did fight. Whenever I feel like giving up, I think of Fay saying
- "Ali, baby, fight for your life."
