The Hedge laying competition in co Kildare yesterday was fascinating. Got to watch the teams pleaching & binding and check out the regeneration in the hedges the #hedgelaying from two years ago. Loved to see a range of age groups keeping the art of living fences alive.
Hand pleached and bent hawthorns at the Irish hedgelaying competition. The cutting and bending seems severe but the laying teams got clean cuts and avoided snapping any trees (I did see the judges step in to stop a less experienced hedge layer from losing a tree.).I wish I could have gotten closeups of the hazel binding in progress. One last snap from the hedgelaying competition.

Many ponds here are still dry. This one at Hartburn didn't look too promising, choked with invasive Curly Waterweed, but it was full of dragonfly larvae. At this time of year these are predominantly hawkers (Aeshnidae), which have multi-year life-cycles. @teesbirds.bsky.social

Difference a day makes with filling up the new pond dig in our back field in county Laois. Also found two mystery footprints. (5x9cm card for size ref). Next 5 years of natural regen will tell us what sort of seed bank we are working with 🤞. Historically alluvial floodplains. #WildlifePonds
Pond dig after hot summer 18/09/26. We were very surprised not to have hit water sooner. Very depleted ground water. 19/09/26 one day after previous photos. Signs of the clay starting to come together a bit in and a lot of relief. Hopefully some winter ducks can help grade and work that clay for us even more. Predator footprint almost 4cm in diam. Bird footprint almost 8 cm in length. I have not idea about this type of id. I'm just happy to see it.
