Christmas presents sorted! We're delighted to see a whole chapter on hedgerows & field boundaries in the new Farming for Nature handbook. It covers planting, managing, and rejuvenating hedgerows—plus creating 'bee scrapes' on sunny earth banks at their base for solitary bees 🐝

I totally agree. I don’t know how to do those tech lists. I’ve been farming with nature for several decades. I’m happen to be one of 50 Irish farmers who took part & wrote a small piece in the new “Farming With Nature Handbook”. Here’s the list of environmentally aware farmers inside the book cover

Another busy weekend of training with over 15 people taking part! At the Naas hedgerow, we spotted 15 new shoots coming off just one stem that was laid last year! This new growth makes a much more dense and well-protected habitat for wildlife 🐦🦔 ➡️ www.hedgerows.ie/events

Find out more: www.hedgerows.ie/management
The Naas Biodiversity Group is rejuvenating this
hedgerow through hedge laying. Hedgerows are largely human-made features. Eventually, trees reach the end of their natural lifespan and the base becomes gappy.
Hedge laying is a traditional management technique
that partly cuts the stem close to ground level so it
bends without breaking. Regrowth from the cuts thickens the base and rejuvenates the hedgerow; creating a dense, healthy habitat ideal for nesting
wildlife. Mature trees are left at intervals for bird perching posts. Laying can extend the life span of most hedgerow trees almost indefinitely.

1. Stems are cut and laid over
2. New shoots regrow from the base
3. A more dense, healthy habitat in the long term

We recommend planting hedgerows with trees of Irish Provenance—from seeds collected and grown in Ireland. ⏰ Phenology (when they bud-burst, flower and seed) is better adapted to our environment and wildlife. 🦠 Lower disease risk (e.g. Fireblight). ➡️ hedgerows.ie/planting/
Are you planting a hedgerow this winter? Buy Irish Provenance Certified trees!

- Bud-burst, flowers & seeds are adapted to local wildlife.
- Imports increase disease risk (e.g. Fireblight).
