At least in our research agency, there has been a hiring freeze since the moment Trump 2.0 took office. So, even when Congress appropriates the money to fund us, we cannot hire back positions we lost. This includes scientists, technicians, and admin support.

Here you can see a course correction, “oops we should not have run off so many employees” moment, going from negative 6,881 employees in 2025 to an increase of over 1,000 in 2026. Really absurd, self inflicted wound at the Forest Service.

I understand that rescinding the #RoadlessRule will facilitate logging, but I think the below framing misstates the issue (since it’s already possible to log IRAs). The virtue of roadless areas isn’t that they prevent timber harvest—it’s that they prohibit *roads*! www.nytimes.com/2026/08/18/c...

This summer we officially kicked off the Kenai Animal Monitoring Study (KAMS) on the Chugach NF and Kenai NWR to assess climate-mediated changes in habitat suitability for moose, bears, and other mammals. First images are rolling in now, and I'm excited to share more as this study develops!

Incredible. When E—n M—k & his crew obliterated USAID in a weekend, they deleted a vast trove of publicly-funded knowledge: the Development Experience Clearinghouse. A Canadian high school student (!) happened to have downloaded the entire thing for a project. AidData has now posted it for all.

Before Jimothy, there was EDGAR: we caught a newborn elk back in 2021 with a stunted neck, probably due to a congenital defect. We named the little guy “Edgar” and while sadly he was not long for this world, we got a chance to learn about his condition which is rarely documented in wild animals. 1/6

This is the key. Thinking up new ideas is never the bottleneck - it's all the institutional slow downs: Grants take years, purchasing approvals, sponsored projects office need so many docs & let's not forget how long it takes our animals to breed. AI doesn't solve the most important bottlenecks
