The virtue of roadless areas isn’t that they prevent timber harvest—it’s that they prohibit *roads*! www.nytimes.com/2026/08/18/c...nytimes.comTrump Administration Moves to Allow Logging in Pristine National ForestsThe move to repeal the ‘roadless rule’ would pave the way for road construction and logging in nearly 45 million acres of untouched back country. 24918
Nate Hooven @nhooven.bsky.social · 19/08/2026A lot has been said and written about poor quality figures in scientific papers, but something I’ve noticed a lot recently are low resolution (very pixelated) figures in respected journals! It makes me sad when they would otherwise make for nice data visualizations. 001
Nate Hooven @nhooven.bsky.social · 07/08/2026#ggplot2 users / spatial folks: any recommendations for maintaining high quality plots that include both vector graphics AND raster maps? Any of my normal plots get saved as .svg so I can scale later if needed, but obv. with rasters that won’t work. I’d prefer not to lose quality for either. 100

Nate Hooven @nhooven.bsky.social · 28/07/2026Before Jimothy, there was EDGAR: we caught a newborn elk back in 2021 with a stunted neck, probably due to a congenital defect. We named the little guy “Edgar” and while sadly he was not long for this world, we got a chance to learn about his condition which is rarely documented in wild animals. 1/6 122

Nate Hooven @nhooven.bsky.social · 18/06/2026Reminds me of the “adaptive fetal sex ratio” idea from long-lived mammals, except that predicts more males when times are good (partly because males tend to be larger and more expensive to produce). Females are larger in raptors so this makes sense! 000
