The next Democratic administration must prioritize preventing the scam known as the "deferred resignation program" (Elon Musk's "Fork") from ever happening again.

This is what it means to be a federal worker. Which is part of why it makes me so furious to see how federal workers have been treated by Trump and Musk and DOGE.

I'm thinking today of my father-in-law, who, along with other federal workers, was tasked with sifting through the towers' rubble, with the goal of returning remains and personal belongings to families who lost loved ones. He rarely talks about it, but when he does, it's clear the pain is still raw.

Yes, and the way to do this is to live on the land, work it daily, & make friends with all the other residents — wild animals, invasive plants, everyone: “we have to get rid of all that extra fuel, and once a semblance of balance is restored, make friends with natural, lower-severity ground fires…”

America is losing its war against wildfire
Wildland firefighting is increasingly facing an intractable reality: We’re stuck in a vicious cycle. A doom loop.

In case this wasn’t obvious, a core reason I talk about USAID and Elon Musk’s historically-hideous mass murdering actions all the time is because he must not be allowed to get away with it.

I spent some time poking around the Ferris Fire footprint. As you would expect for a fire burning over several days, what it leaves behind is a mix of severities but ultimately more acres of less toasty than more toasty.
Treated area of ponderosa pine with minimal overstory mortality.Oak sprouting back after the fire.Dense area with more small diameter trees that saw some higher tree mortality from the fire. Sprouting Gambel oak following the Ferris Fire.

Yes! 1. Off season prescribed fire 2. Shaded fuel breaks/fuels reduction 3. Defensible space around WUI homes (more on this after) 4. Home hardening 5. Addressing climate change Disclaimer: Some amount of wildfire is inevitable, just like other natural disasters. We can still mitigate its harms.

Over a year ago I said that calling DOGE a cost-cutting program was like referring to a guillotine as a weight-loss device. Evidence that it was indeed the pretext we all knew it was continues to pile up. Cost savings? Well, read the article.

It’s not just mitigation. We lost an incredible percentage of the wildfire “militia” due to indiscriminate DOGE cuts. And now remaining militia members feel they can’t support wildfire suppression because they are left doing the jobs of all the people lost to DOGE cuts.

To me this is a marked shift from thoughts and prayers, from we can’t talk about climate during an active event, to people really starting to grapple with the repeating pattern that we all know is completely unsustainable.
