Mathematician & NASA human computer Katherine Johnson was born #OTD in 1918. She was instrumental in the success of the first US manned spaceflights, calculating complex trajectories enabling humans to reach orbit & land on the moon. Her story was told in Hidden Figures (book/movie). #WomenInSTEM
A split-image portrait of Katherine Johnson, the pioneering Black NASA mathematician: On the left, a black-and-white historical photo from her NASA career in the 1960s shows a smiling middle-aged woman wearing cat-eye glasses and a light-colored dress with white collar and trim, seated at her desk with a globe and papers in the background. On the right, a color photo from 2015 depicts an elderly Katherine Johnson (in her late 90s) seated in a wheelchair during the Presidential Medal of Freedom ceremony, wearing glasses, a dark suit jacket, an orange top, a blue ribbon with the medal, and holding a green item in her lap, as she looks directly at the viewer with a gentle expression. The side-by-side images contrast her youthful professional life with her honored later years.

This is from today's newsletter by @phillipspobrien.bsky.social, telling it like it is. This is where we are. phillipspobrien.substack.com/p/canada-is-...
The US Cannot (and Should Not) Be Trusted By Any State

What the Canadians have discovered is that the USA cannot be trusted. This needs some discussion. All states lie and deceive. That is nothing new. Indeed, one element of successful diplomacy is the effective and well-placed strategic lie. However, if your entire policy is to lie, all the time and with malice, it makes a mockery of international relations.

Yet, that is precisely where the USA is now. It has reached the state where there is no national interest or even national policy. There is the will of a fundamentally dishonest president, often filtered through the mind of a 35-year-old stalker.

As I have said before, this means that the US government needs to be seen as a threat, not a friend, by other states, particularly those who are, or at least were, US allies. The US cannot be trusted because it is run by a dishonest criminal, and behaves as such.

The implications of this are massive and will run far beyond this Trump term of office. The US has shown that it will opt for a criminal to run it, even after that criminal tried to subvert a free election just a few years earlier. It has shown that within the USA there is a large and loyal pool of supporters for that criminal (say 33-38% of the country), who will follow said criminal even though he is openly corrupt.

In other words, a far too large percentage of Americans have shown that they will support and continue to support a criminal leadership. If they still support Trump now, they can and likely will support another criminal at another time.

Computer scientist Margaret Hamilton coined the term “software engineer.” She directed the Software Engineering Division at MIT’s Instrumentation Lab & led development of the on-board flight software for NASA’s Apollo Guidance Computer. She was born #OTD in 1936 & turns 90 today! #WomenInSTEM
Two side-by-side black-and-white photographs of pioneering computer scientist Margaret Hamilton (born August 17, 1936). The left panel features a mature, close-up portrait where Hamilton gazes directly at the viewer with a serene, confident, and reflective expression, framed by her long, dark, slightly silvering hair. The right panel is a famous archival photograph showing a younger Hamilton standing indoors next to a towering stack of bound paper binders containing the Apollo Guidance Computer source code, which she led the development of at MIT. She is smiling broadly and wears a striped, long-sleeved mini dress with dark Mary Jane shoes and glasses, resting her hand proudly on top of the massive column of printed code. The overall composition contrasts her youthful triumph with her enduring legacy, capturing an optimistic, intellectually rigorous mood that highlights her monumental contributions to space exploration.

Le Corbusier (1887-1965) : Head of a Woman (Tête de Femme) c.1953-62 carved and polychromed wood sculpture The result of a unique collaboration between architect Le Corbusier and the Breton master cabinetmaker, carpenter Joseph Savina.
Tête de Femme (c. 1953–62) is a unique carved and polychromed wood sculpture created through the renowned artistic collaboration between architect Le Corbusier and master cabinetmaker Joseph Savina. It represents an intersection of Le Corbusier's modular, cubist-inspired biomorphic forms and Savina's precise woodworking craft.

Collaboration and Creation

The Partnership: Beginning in 1945, Le Corbusier provided sketches, paintings, and conceptual designs, which Joseph Savina translated into three-dimensional wooden volumes.

Polychromy:
Le Corbusier personally applied the paint and color schemes (polychromy) to the finished wooden surfaces.Signatures: These joint pieces typically bear the joint initials "JS" and "LC".Artistic SignificanceForm: The sculpture abstracts the female head into interlocking geometric planes and organic contours.Market Value: Works from the Le Corbusier-Savina collaboration are rare and highly sought after by collectors, commanding hundreds of thousands of dollars at major auction houses like Drouot.
