"An army marches on its stomach" is true of the immune system, says @delgoffelab.bsky.social on Quirks & Quarks podcast, speaking about his new @nature.com study that showed how a single meal primes T cells to better fight infection and respond to cancer immunotherapy. www.cbc.ca/listen/live-...
Screenshot of Quirks and Quarks podcast episode synopsis: You may have heard the old adage “starve a fever, feed a cold.” But following that advice might not put you on the best path towards a speedy recovery. Recent experiments in both humans and mice have found that the immune system gets a measurable boost from food. Eating a balanced meal nudges a type of white blood cell called a T cell to jump into action more quickly, which can help the body detect and stave off infections – and even fight some cancers. Greg Delgoffe, an immunologist at the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, was a senior author on the study, which was published in Nature.
