It's a huge democratic deficit, really a catastrophe. We know from polls, studies (even the Tory one that was meant to find against LTNs), an election results that safe streets are *extremely* popular, but the minority opposition to them is more aggressive, older, and richer than the support.

There's bottomless anger on Facebook in Glasgow. Politicians have to stop being dribbled like basketballs by small by small angry groups of pensioners while large numbers of parents who don't have the time to post on Facebook 10x a day are forced to inch along pavements clutching their toddlers.

Somehow, the city produced almost the only area in Scotland with a 30% fall in traffic, huge support from schools and senior medics amongst others, really minimal impact on adjacent roads per the council’s own figures, and now has overturning SUVs on the bike bus route.

A small number of angry drivers / pandering politicians had enough incentive to get the council to remove a years-old quiet neighbourhood scheme. The same concentration of power doesn’t exist in the diffuse body of local people who would like not to have overturning SUVs in their street

Very funny how Wes Streeting’s statement that the local farmer only had a “partial picture” read like “the intelligence services were all over this plot already” and could now be anything from that to “oh wow you’ll never guess what they found in the vans and I really wish I could tell you”.

Someone’s just shared pretendy working-class hero Bonny Prince Bob‘s latest Instagram contribution on Edinburgh trams. The lack of any factual basis in any of the populist claims is astounding.

it’s kind of incredible that they’ll just come out and say ‘legislation that makes life better for the vast majority of people impairs my ability to live as toxically as I prefer’ and you’re supposed to take it seriously

If you live anywhere near Ayr, it would be a great time to write to your councillor in support of cycle lanes. They are reading Facebook and deciding the posters there should set transport policy.

An insight into cycling trends - the introduction of Voi bikes has added about 500 additional cyclists per day to Leith Walk; the tram closure added another 250 at the peak. The Voi effect is much larger at the weekend, while the inverse is true for the tram.

A snap going the other way (into town) this morning. I was about midway in the queue, with about as many people behind me. This was around 8.45am, so some time after the *actual* peak, which seems to be around 8.15am.
My view from the middle of a queue of cycle traffic, waiting to cross at traffic lights on the South City Way cycle route in the south of Glasgow, around 8.45am this morning. The city centre is up ahead.

There's something amazing about being in a peloton of 40+ bikes on the cycle lane heading home. Every driver at the front of a queue of side-street traffic... every person peering out of a bus window... every passer-by gets the message: "Oh wow, yeah, people are using this stuff". Never gets old.
My view travelling home by bike: Loads of people cycling on the South City Way cycle lane on Victoria Road in Govanhill in the Southside of Glasgow, during evening rush hour. A woman in front of me wears an incredibly fetching gold coloured helmet.

They appear to be more interested in maximising the traffic flow through it. Red lights at the pedestrian crossings are routinely ignored. Saw a woman pushing a buggy nearly be hit by someone driving through a red yesterday.

Parents representing 5 schools requested that the filters which had been on the Greenbank to Meadows Quiet Route for 5 years, and had contributed to a significant reduction in traffic, remain in place but the Council removed them due to errors in the documentation. Now the speeding drivers are back.

My favourite recent example of Edinburgh NIMBYism was the residents in Corstorphine who demanded and got school street restrictions on their own road (Manse St) then a few years later objected to similar restrictions on neighbouring Manse Road because it would inconvenience them.

*Every* school should have all through roads festooned with Zebra and Puffin crossings and every side street made a school street. No consultation, no debate, just implemented. And yes, inconveniencing and slowing down traffic is *THE WHOLE POINT*. It shouldn't be controversial or difficult.

The council has these things down to a fine art. Yes you *could* have some basic road safety measures outside a school, but it's going to take you a huge amount of effort and your kids will almost be finished by the time a spade hits the ground, so are you sure you want to really bother?

Has Kevin Lang explained what the “other better ways” are that will allow buses to magically skip past queues of single occupancy cars on Turnhouse Road or do they go to a different school and we wouldn’t know them?

Cowcaddens Road was a four lane road - it now looks and feels like a street. So many parts of Edinburgh have similar urban dual carriageways that could have the same treatment: making the city safer, greener, quieter and less congested. #StreetsNOTroads

People will dismiss Malcolm Offord claiming that more than half of Scots are unemployed, but as the parent of a child out of work I really think it's serious. My daughter's been unemployed for almost three years and it's been really hard. There are so many barriers for toddlers getting into work!
