I'm (still) watching Life is Beautiful, a 2010 weekend drama that had the first** lead gay couple in a mainstream #kdrama. There's so much misogyny in this show 🤬 but the gay relationship is sensitively portrayed. **We haven't had another in the 20 years since 😒

I agree with 90% of what Alisa said. But also, one of the last shows I watched before becoming obsessed with kdramas was the Spanish teen drama Élite. I dropped it because there was too much casual sex. I don’t demand sexless TV. But what makes me love kdrama is the slow burn before we get there.

To me the accusation of sex=“Americanization” is similar to people saying that Asian skin whitening products is *because of* western beauty ideals, ignoring the literal centuries of makeup and trends. Basically, it’s Eurocentric. Like everything is a reaction to or must be influenced by the west

Something occurred to me: we have this sex debate going on about kdramas and meanwhile The Early Spring was a big hit and no one was upset about the intimate scenes. Instead the conversation was about whether the ml is toxic or not.

🧵Moar on the sex topic: I've seen several people reference the "big kdramas" being sex free as evidence that Westerners gravitated to dramas for that reason and that Koreans don't want to see sexual content. But I think this is a case of correlation does not equal causation.

Based on the sex & violence in Korean movies, too, it isn't Americanization of kdramas, it's limitations on kdramas due to various factors, some of them being political, financial, distributive, or access restrictions, etc. Too much to consider unless one is researching this academically really...

As far as I understand it, this is because of the regulations imposed on broadcast television. Netflix and streaming sites have always existed outside those rules, so their content (written, acted, produced by Koreans) remains undoubtedly Korean while not being constrained by those morality rules

I'm still making my way through 63 eps of the 2010 kdrama #LifeIsBeautiful because of scenes like these. First (and only?) lead gay couple of a mainstream kdrama. Pretty sure the second dialogue is the writers having a bit of fun because the context wasn't supposed to be spicy but well 😆

Finished #TheBloodOfYouth and freakin' loved it to the end. I could've easily watched 10 more eps. It's not a perfect drama, it's got flaws that I'll get into in the thread, but the friendships, the world building and badass fights made this a joy to watch (SPOILERS in video and thread) #cdrama

Still watching #TheBloodOfYouth and WOW the banquet scene was spectacular! The writing and staging, the way they built up the tension and then the emotional payoff was like a master class in storytelling. I'm so happy to have a truly good #Cdrama to watch, it's been a while.
