Susan Collins claims that our reporting about CEO Martin Kao’s bribery allegations took him at his word. That’s not true. We reviewed a trove of FBI evidence and legal records. Here’s how we independently corroborated much of Kao’s account.

Watch: We Uncovered Bribery Allegations Involving Susan Collins
In late 2024, FBI investigators had enough evidence to launch a sweeping bribery probe of politicians including Sen. Susan Collins — until Trump gutted the unit in charge. ProPublica has revealed the ...

Finally, my paper is out! It shows how bacteria can utilize their CRISPR immunity against transducing phages to turn them into "pollinators". This way bacteria can speed up their own adaptation through recombination by two orders of magnitude compared to mutations, and they do so when starving!

This whole thing with Thom Tillis & his book just rubs me wrong. When it mattered, voting to confirm Trump’s unqualified cabinet, Tillis was nothing but a Trump sycophant, too afraid to do the write thing. Now that he’s leaving Congress, he’s trying to be some courageous truth teller? Bullshit.

Is this proposition a $4 billion giveaway to a billionaire’s LA research center?
Proposition 38 will award $4 billion to one unnamed research center. Under the very specific criteria, only one center seemingly qualifies.

That’s how we build democratic science in the shell of what the fascists have destroyed, not this billionaire vanity project that’ll end up funding $50,000 catering bills because no single center within a university needs or can use that much money in an impactful way. (3/3)

My union has been lobbying for a California-equivalent of NIH to be established with bonds. Newsom recently signed a bill putting that plan on the 2028 ballot. Funding will be open to competitive proposals from all institutions in the state. Grads and postdocs will serve on its board. (2/3)

I’m an early career scientist working in cancer immunotherapy, I will be looking for work sometime in the next few years, members of my union will almost certainly work in this center, and I am still strongly encouraging a NO vote. No single institution can efficiently use $4 billion. (1/3)

San Diego research institutions aren’t talking about Prop. 38, even though they stand to receive billions
Californians to decide if they want the state to borrow $8.4 billion to support research that aims to deliver cures for cancer, Alzheimer’s and heart disease “in our lifetime.”
