Hate it when you see what you think is a cool bird and you look it up later and it’s called like the Common Dumb Asshole. “Birders throughout history have hated its guts. It can’t even fly right.” I thought I saw an interesting guy.

this is actually a critical point about the limits of AI as tools, they can be bounded by what the user thinks to specify. if no user thinks to ask for a car when all everyone knows is the horse you'd never get one.

regrettably, frustratingly, I think it may be difficult to cover the development of machine gods without hanging out at the bar in which the priests chat, even if it is _that_ kind of bar

oh hey since we're at it, here's a way to segfault python without writing C code or using ctypes/cffi
clarisse@fedora ~> python
Python 3.14.7 (main, Aug 10 2026, 00:00:00) [GCC 16.1.1 20260515 (Red Hat 16.1.1-2)] on linux
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.

I suspect they're just not really aware of why AI acts as such an enticing accelerant / how much more a single developer can do as a result if you believe it's the thing that makes everything worse, costs a trillion dollars, and deletes water, it doesn't make any sense why anyone would use it
0190
philpax @philpax.me · 5h
still technically possible without committing copyright infringement! but yes, I agree; I imagine a lot of the people agreeing with that sentiment may be applying a standard that they don't necessarily hold themselves to
140
philpax @philpax.me · 5h
eh, I think that one's a bit more defensible; a lot of emudevs (I can't speak to PPSSPP specifically) go out of their way to avoid looking at leaked material to ensure that there's no risk of IP contamination (e.g. github.com/xenia-projec... )

philpax @philpax.me · 6h
I don't think they *do* understand, though, as demonstrated by many of the replies calling the developer more-or-less braindead for using AI I'm fine with people opting out for ethical reasons, even if I think it will become increasingly untenable, but that's not what's happening here
1340
philpax @philpax.me · 6h
I was considering a snarky quote-post of this but there's really no point it will keep happening and it will remain inexplicable to this crowd why someone working on an open-source labour of love, largely for free, might choose to use a tool that lets them do more with less
Dude, this is genuinely so fucking disappointing. Nearly all of the commits I’ve seen for PPSSPP involve generative AI from Claude in the past week alone, and their entire newest dev blog is almost entirely written by Claude. Almost half of the commits in the past 3 months use Claude for AI code.

I generally avoid consuming "side media" (including, in this case, building kits) for media I haven't consumed; it's a bit pathological, but I want to have appreciated it in its original context first, you know?

The fact that there is a social stigma around being a vegan is frankly embarrassing for us as a society. At absolutely worst, veganism should be accepted as a perfectly valid lifestyle choice in a liberal society, and imo it should be seen much more positively than that

I have to quite consciously pace myself, screw around, play video games, or I will just burn myself to the bone because all of a sudden what might otherwise be distracted downtime can instead be moving some AI project along. and I am picky enough that I'll lock back in to get it right and not relax.

I have a server with free optical drive bays, so I figure I can put it there; if it was external, I'd maybe use that to make it easier to work with (e.g. having it at my desk while I load in CDs), but it's ultimately not that big of a deal

Can Gen AI do Art, the metaphysical creative process? Open question, depends on who you ask. Can Gen AI make Art, the product that people pay money for? Yes. They objectively can.
