Patriarchy uses the artificial construction of Childhood to exclude and police children. You don't "behave like a child" so you get tried as an adult or sexualized or put to work. We blame children for what we do to them because it's not enough to oppress. We must pretend they consented.

That's not even before we address the question of who even gets to be a child. I know I was entirely denied a childhood, that adults around me didn't see me as innocent but as a burden and even dangerous, but mostly as a means to an end.

Children of any age can be married to adults in over half of US states. Those same children cannot legally file for divorce, report abuse, or escape to DV shelters BECAUSE they are minors. It's not even that exploitation exists....it's that children have no legal or social avenue for recourse.
