I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

Kimi K3, a Chinese open weight model from Moonshot AI, is a frontier class model that is going toe to toe with Claude Fable and GPT 5.6. So much for Chinese models being months behind American models. They’ve already caught up at a fraction of the token price. Paying Fable prices seems silly now.

I work at Google DeepMind. This won't make me popular. But it's all public reporting: 2014: DeepMind reportedly sold to Google on conditions: no military use, independent oversight 2026: a Pentagon contract for "any lawful government purpose" Not one safeguard survived intact
Collage titled "Trust is not Governance — an essay from inside Google DeepMind, written in personal capacity."

A 2014 memorandum, "Conditions of the Acquisition," lists: military applications of DeepMind technology banned; deployment decisions before an independent ethics board (as reported in Mallaby's The Infinity Machine).

Red threads lead to a 2026 U.S. Department of Defense agreement for classified networks reading "any lawful government purpose," with safety settings and filters adjusted at the government's request and no contractor veto (reported terms, The Information, Apr. 2026).

what an introductory paragraph!!
reads: Introduction
In March 2026, an Anthropic employee released the source code of Claude Code, a
wrapper around their large language model that is widely used to generate code in
programming tasks. Its thousands of lines of Typescript code contained many hopeful
prompts and in cantations to shape Claude’s behaviour. Here are some examples:
“Report outcomes faithfully”; “Never characterize incomplete or broken work as done”;
“Be careful not to introduce security vulnerabilities ” (prompts.ts in Anthropic 2026) .
There is more than a passing resemblance here to the Azande witch -doctor apprentice
who, while stirring the medicine, utters: “You medicine which I am cooking, mind you
always speak the truth to me. Do not let anyone injure me with his witchcraft, but le t
me recognize all witches. … Let me be expert at the witch -doctor’s craft so that people
will give me many spears on account of my magic.” (Evans-Pritchard 1937: 93). In the
case of Claude, the incantation s appeared insufficient: analysis of the codebase, which
according to a company executive was “pretty much 100% written by Claude Code ”,
revealed severe security vulnerabilities (Townsend 2026).
