It’s been two years since Ontario Place West Island was destroyed for a planned private spa. Hundreds of trees were cut down - here’s a snapshot of the many species who lost habitat. 🧵
Side-by-side comparison of a landscape on the Toronto waterfront. In one scene, an island is covered in trees reflected in a still channel of water. The other image of the same place shows a barren stretch land with a pile of rubble in the centre.

Jesse Brown apparently has time to criticize everyone except the unhinged lunatic in the National Post invoking the same rhetoric as violent religious extremists against Avi Lewis
Jesse Brown • @JesseBrown • 2h

This is a complete misrepresentation, nothing Goldstein wrote remotely endorses violence against Lewis.
The suggestion that the real problem in Canada is violence from Jews against the antizionists who incite massacres against us is a moral inversion with no basis in fact.Jesse Brown

Happy 30th anniversary of your Canadian release, Proper Crash. You're the first movie I ever went to see theatrically multiple times and I've still got the ticket stub from the screening I went to on my birthday tucked inside the case of the most recent Criterion edition. Love you lots!
A poster for David Cronenberg's 1996 crowd-pleaser, Crash. Viewed through the passenger-side window of a red sedan, a dark-haired woman with her top pushed open straddles the driver, a man in a tweed coat with his head tipped back slightly. Their faces are inches apart and his hand is on her left breast. Thin white capitals spell out some simple credits: "JEREMY THOMAS AND ROBERT LANTOS PRESENT / AN ALLIANCE COMMUNICATIONS PRODUCTION / A DAVID CRONENBERG FILM / JAMES SPADER HOLLY HUNTER ELIAS KOTEAS / CRASH / DEBORAH KARA UNGER AND ROSANNA ARQUETTE"; the title of the film is done up in dented chrome lettering with a white halo like the headlights of a car visible through fog visible at both ends of the word.

Whatever you do, don't be reminded of the existence of an '80s sitcom you once enjoyed because you will find it on YouTube and then you'll watch it until they do A Very Special Episode and the earnestness will make you want to kiss a bus.

When some comics became intangible online, paper became *visible* to artists again, leading to beautiful new paper comics. Now, when some "art" becomes inhuman, *we* become visible to ourselves again. What beautiful new *human* art might be the result?
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

When organized crime buys up ServiceOntario franchises, you get this. We've said it a million times. Because they have access to all ServiceOntario info - particularly driver's license and registration - they can steal cars to order. Because they know where the cars they want are likely parked.

Started reading Thomas King's book Sufferance on the bus over the weekend and while the cover blurb doesn't say a word about it, it's the story of someone who ditches corporate life to move home and tend to the graves at an abandoned residential school. So, you know, kind of timely.
The cover of Thomas King's 2021 novel, Sufferance: a speckled red background with the author's name in tall black serif lettering filling the top three quarters of the space, a flock of spot-glossed red crows flying across the letters, and the title at the bottom. In between the two blocks of text, a review quotation from the Globe and Mail: "King is a master of so many genres. This novel fits right in with these fraught times that have shone a light on financial, racial, and social inequality."
