Word embeddings alone are not the be-all end-all for historical data: semantic changes over time trip them up 🤷‍♀️ BUT have you heard of contextual word embeddings? 👀 In this article, we use them to untangle the meanings of terms Ruland's 1612 alchemical dictionary. doi.org/10.1080/0002... #DH

I've been out of the buying-physical-books world for quite a while now (a couple of international moves will do that to you!). But looks like maybe a bit of permanence has descended upon us. So, the question is: where does one reliably shop for (used) books that isn't A*Z*N? #booksky

Saw this on a different social media site and it’s absolutely perfect
Close up picture of a crocheted creation. It’s a miniature teal dumpster with grey wheels/legs. It’s anthropomorphised with small black eyes, a nose, and two arms. Coming out of the top are orange and yellow “flames”. The two arms are holding a small white sign . Written in black letters the sign reads: Emotional Support Dumpster Fire. It’s fine. I’m fine. Everything is fine!

Long, but *excellent*, thread by @shahanmemon.bsky.social on practicing empathy within academia. Worth your time to read the whole thing, then plan ways to implement the ideas.

To my dear DH Community in Germany, an Abschiedsbrief.

I’m so cross that Exeter is telling students & soon-to-be students that their degrees will not be impacted by the proposed cuts. It’s not true. Students and degree programmes will be impacted if there are no longer subject specialists doing the teaching. #DefendExeterUni

The University of Exeter houses one of the best Theology/Religion departments in the UK. It will be a huge loss for the field if the department is decimated. It is one of many humanities departments under threat and like similar moves at US institutions should be a concern to everyone in academia.

There's a genre of LLM criticism that I find so destructively unhelpful: using a single vague prompt to "analyze" data, e.g. "summarize the themes across this collection of texts," to claim "see! LLMs don't work." & it's getting published! Reviewers this is not good work pls reject it if you see it.

I maintain a pretty active presence on LinkedIn. One of the things I find striking is how AI-cautious my Bsky network is, and how AI-for-business gung-ho my LinkedIn network is. I don't always know what to make of this distinction. I haven't figured out how to think about AI in industry yet.

While @vanlinduist.bsky.social is creating awesome presentations on design, I've been inspired by one of her designs and decided to try to recreate a medieval font from a real manuscript. I'm not sure if this ever became a proper font (probably not), it was just fun to try.
A promotional graphic for a medieval-style font set against a red background. A central cream-colored card features the letters "Aa" in a large, red, gothic style. Below it, text in red and black reads, "from medieval manuscript to digital edition, real medieval font based on medieval handwriting." At the bottom of the card, smaller grey text reads, "Praha, Národní knihovna České Republiky, IV C 3."
