Some of us are starving for durable, mutually caring, multidisciplinary community that is built on a shared set of values. Where we can say "today is hard because of X personal/professional thing, and I know it can't always be fixed, but I do need it to be known. Now, let's do the work together."

Extremely excited to share the CFP for the ✨fifth✨ annual #QueerBibliography conference! bit.ly/QB2027CfP When? 2-4 September 2027 Where? Manchester, UK & online Theme: TAKING STOCK Deadline for abstracts: 29 January 2027 Decisions: by 12 March 2027 Submit here: forms.gle/WGjXKA1d6gWm...
Queer Bibliography
Taking Stock
Manchester, UK and online
2-4 September 2027

Call for Proposals

Since the inaugural 2023 conference, queer bibliography has grown from an interesting concept to a burgeoning field. Our 2027 theme, Taking Stock, marks the fifth annual conference and is a chance to pause and reflect on genealogies of the field, the present state of queer bibliographical enquiry, and our senses of the future. How might we trace queer histories of queer bibliography? How can we imagine critical futures for bibliographical enquiry within and beyond its traditional academic locations? Where do we find ourselves and our work?

Stock also has meaning in bibliography. While “stock” originally referred to a tree trunk or plant stem, and figuratively to the source of a line of descent or even a human torso, it later began to connote an aggregate of goods—in the context of bookmaking, one might own a stock of paper or pasteboard. Towards the mid-nineteenth century, “paper stock” began to connote the raw material of paper itself. “Stock” might refer to the inventories of booksellers, the process of beginning and curating an institutional or personal collection, and the supply and material characteristics of paper. From the raw materials of books to the origins and shapes of personal, commercial, and institutional collections, how does "stock" participate in the production, articulation, and study of queer textuality and textual communities? What is queer about materiality, the ecology of books, and the processes of making and engaging with (collections of) physical textual objects?

We invite participants to engage in stock-taking or reflect on
bibliographical stock, broadly defined. We welcome meta, theoretical, and historiographical work that takes stock of queer bibliography, and we
welcome proposals that relate to “stock” in bibliography, book history, and reception studies. This three-day hybrid conference will be hosted at the John Rylands
Library, part of the University of Manchester, and online on 2–4 September 2027. The conference will feature two days of panels, conversation, and discussion on 2 and 3 September and will be followed by an optional workshop on 4 September. Conference programming may also include evening receptions, tours of Manchester libraries (including Chetham’s Library, the oldest public library in England), and collection viewings at the Rylands.

The conference welcomes participants from a diverse range of fields and
career stages, including: book arts practitioners, activists, postgraduates,
early career researchers, independent scholars, librarians, archivists, and
booksellers, both in person and via video conference. As in past years, the goal of the broadly articulated theme of “taking stock” is to bring people in and to shape conversation, not to exclude or limit. All submissions that engage with the intertwined relationship between queerness and bibliography are encouraged.

Participants will be invited to submit a 2000-word pre-circulated paper,
before presenting in panels of 10-minute papers. We also welcome
alternative contributions, such as workshops, roundtables, or self-organised seminars and creative presentations, with a pre-circulated submission that provides a grounding for the conference contribution.

Contributors should submit an abstract of 200–300 words, along with a
short bio, by 29 January 2027:

https:/ /forms.gle/WGjXKA1d6gWmtfjZ8

Prospective speakers will be informed of the outcome by 12th March. Pre-circulated papers will be collected and shared in mid-July.

Any questions should be directed to: queerbibliography@gmail.com

Also loving this figure from Cercone, N and McCalla, G (1984) Artificial Intelligence: Underlying Assumptions and Basic Objectives. Journal of the American Society of Information Science, 35(5), 280-290.
This image shows the trunk of a tree, and the roots of the tree trunk indicate the many "roots" of Artificial Intelligence according to Cercone and McCalla (1984). The root systems are broken into five sections. Section 1 on the left is labelled LINGUISTICS, and the branches within that root system include [A]Psycho-Linguistics,[B]Socio-Linguistics, [C]Computational Linguistics. Section 2 on the upper right is labeled COMPUTER SCIENCE, and the branch within that root system includes [D] Adaptive Systems. Section 3 on the bottom left is labelled PSYCHOLOGY, and the branches within that root system include [E] Cognitive Psychology. Section 4 in the bottom middle is labelled PHILOSOPHY, and the branches within that root system include [F] Philosophy of Mind, [G]Philosophy of Language, and [H] Logic. Section 5 on the bottom right is labelled ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING and the branches of that root system include [I] Robotics, [J] Image Processing, and [K] Pattern Recognition. The authors indicate through shading that the root systems overlap in some cases. The figure is labeled "Fig. 1. AI is an interdisciplinary field." This figure is found on page 281 of Cercone and McCalla (1984) Artificial Intelligence: Underlying Assumptions and Basic Objectives. Journal of the American Society of Information Science, 35(5), 280-290.

For an upcoming piece on the early years of AI in LIS higher education, I'm reading a lot of work from the 1980s and 1990s. Kranch (1992)"Teaching Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems: Concepts in Library Curricula" details the results of a survey sent to ALA and non-ALA UG, MA, PHD programs.
There is general agreement among respondents that indexing, bibliographic description, on-demand translations, 90% recall and precision, and consultation reference service should involve AI/ES [ES here standing for 'Expert Systems']. These are tasks for which algorithms could conceivably be developed. Tasks seemingly more complex and "human" such as item selection and voice recognition, even if perceived as technically possible, are not tasks that respondents would like to see automated. Ready-reference and bibliographic instruction only received lukewarm support. These attitudes will translate into teaching biases that seek to keep automation "in its place" and away from roles viewed as requiring professional judgment. Such biases will direct research away from these areas and hinder the full adoption of AI/ES technology. Librarians would then lag behind other professions in the use of the tools that could multiply the librarians' information retrieval capability." Excerpt rom Kranch, D. (1992). Teaching Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems: Concepts in Library Curricula. Journal of Education for Library and Information Science, Winter, 1992, Vol. 33, No. 1 (Winter, 1992), pp. 18-34. What shapes teaching beyond the classroom? In 'Embedded Pedagogies', Brandon Walsh explores how university structures, policies & values influence pedagogy—& how educators can challenge these to build more equitable & hopeful institutions. Read free: buff.ly/kQau5oV #DigitalHumanities #HigherEd
The book in hardback against text that says:

Embedded Pedagogies: Digital Humanities Teaching and the Infrastructure of Change by Brandon Walsh

This volume offers a timely and incisive exploration of teaching in an era of institutional instability and political pressure. Drawing on extensive experience as a digital humanities practitioner and administrator, Walsh argues that teaching does not occur solely in the classroom but is deeply shaped by the policies, structures, and values embedded within universities themselves.

The book reveals how institutional norms, such as claims to neutrality, intellectualism, and future-orientation, quietly shape what and how educators can teach. Walsh combines theory with practical insight, using case studies, digital projects, and firsthand reflections to demonstrate how these forces operate and how they can be challenged. This volume offers guidance for educators seeking to navigate and transform hostile or resource-constrained environments, advocating for pedagogies grounded in transparency, collective care, and social justice.
