For too long the private operators have prioritised their shareholder’s profits over passengers. Don’t let the North East miss out on bringing our buses back under public control! The consultation closes Monday morning, so speak up THIS WEEKEND! ⤵️ www.northeast-ca.gov.uk/consultation...

This weekend is your last chance to have your say in the North East bus franchising scheme consultation. The proposed scheme seeks to return our bus services to public control - the biggest change to bus services in our region for 40 years. Please take the time to respond this weekend! Links below.

A ca.1954 tenants guide to Peterlee New Town in Co. Durham issued by the Development Corporation. An interesting glimpse into the New Town in its first few years since inception in 1948; the 5,000 inhabitants were about to get their first pub & shops. @municipaldreams.bsky.social flic.kr/p/2sB7TLt
Front cover to the ca. 1954 Tenants Guide to Peterlee New Town in Co. Durham. Shows a b/w aerial photograph of the new houses under construction between open fields. About 5,000 people lived here at the time out of a proposed 30,000 as planned in 1948 and the guide notes the opening of the first shops in the Town Centre and the town's first pub.

John Harris talked about how, for many, austerity is experienced as ambient, “litter everywhere, overgrown grass verges, potholed roads, rusty slides and swings” - the responses to Newcastle City Council’s Big Conversation seems to confirm this:
3. The top requirement is clear: cleaner, safer and tidier public spaces

The most consistent and urgent message across all groups is the need for cleaner, safer, and better-maintained streets and public spaces. This stands significantly above all other issues and cuts across demographics and geographies. This includes concerns relating to: litter and environmental quality, safety and anti-social behaviour and maintenance of roads, pavements and public areas.
