I’m guest editing the next issue of Agita; send me your weirdest <1000 word stories about weird art. Authors from marginalized backgrounds encouraged and prioritized. No AI bullshit. The weirder the better. agitamag.com/submissions/
Issue 3: Ekphrasis
Between October 17 and November 17, guest editor Zachary Gillan will accept submissions of weird flash fiction that features ekphrasis.
Ekphrasis is the verbal representation of a work of visual art.
Weird fiction is a verbal representation of the world, in order to unsettle it.
We want stories that live at the intersection of the two. Pieces that emphasize the eerie power of weird art, whether fully ekphrastic or embedded within a traditional narrative. How does the weird seep in as reality is doubly estranged from these two layers of representation? Cursed paintings, uncanny statues, haunted mezzotints-send us your stories of weird art.

My third novel, HERO COME HOME, officially has a cover! Preorderable from the usual places us.macmillan.com/books/978125...
The cover of my third novel, HERO COME HOME. Four human figures centred, the main image being that of a bearded man looking back over his shoulder (that's Oro, the protagonist), with a circle of symbols behind him. We can see a swan and a key. In the foreground are three people: two women, one with a mysterious marking? scar? who knows!? on her cheek and the other carrying a sword, flanking an older, balding man holding up a pistol. The possibly-scarred woman looks ever so slightly amused, and that is certainly very like her. Everybody else is not happy to be here, or indeed, anywhere

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Walking foster dog Daisy through our lovely Central Oregon scenery has been a fun addition to my usual #Waymakers running and art. I'm sad she hasn't found an adopter yet! But she's been a joy to host.

Distant rolling mountains sit on the horizon.Photo of the same happy tan dog sitting on the trail and smiling at the camera. She has a pink harness and pink leash.Same tan dog on a gravel road walking on a partly cloudy day past huge stacked bales of hay on the right and an irrigation sprinkler on the left. i should clarify, when i write people doing bad things, it's because i am bad. they are me. more importantly, when you read about those bad things, they also become you. that's how story works. in fact, you are going to think about murder before this skeet ends. how's that feel, sicko.

Echoing others: I make a full chemex each morning, then drink it through the day. Good beans make fantastic coffee. One thing worth noting is that, while it looks fragile, it's made of borosilicate glass and actually fairly durable (I'm a klutz and have only managed to break one in five years).

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I'd say I'm a painter who's using the medium of words instead of tempera or oil or charcoal. I'm not telling you a bedtime story with good guys and bad guys and a tidy ending. I'm painting a canvas for you to react and respond to. Your feelings are your own.

Sometimes I feel bullied and shamed by people with gads of books coming out and precocious daily word counts. Then I come to my senses and say fuck that nonsense. I'm not a word machine. I'm not even a writer, really, because I'd liken my work to painting a landscape rather than handing you a map.

It's popular and seems encouraging & kind to say "just get some words on the page and fix them later" but I disagree. Write only what is essential, what your soul says is necessary to survive. Write with intention, precision, and force. Write with fervor, or not at all.

An unexpected thrill: sitting down at the Aero with Richard Kelly ahead of the 4K theatrical rerelease of his cult classic Donnie Darko on its 25th anniversary. We talked about fighting for an artistic vision and whether “I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion” will be quoted in his obituary.

Black text on white page that reads:

In 1882, 10,000 workers marched up Broadway in the first-ever Labor Day parade. Led by democratic socialists and organized by New York’s unions, they rallied the movement that went on to win us weekends, safety standards, overtime pay, a minimum wage, and social security.

None of those victories were guaranteed. And none are permanent.

We created the first-in-the-nation Office of Worker Power to put the full weight of City Hall behind the people who keep New York running. On Labor Day, we honor the workers who came before us by fighting for the workers who come next.

Happy Labor Day, New York. The future of worker power is ours to build. Learn more at nyc.gov/workerpower.
