Smol dog had her very first pupiccino, which she loved so much that while I was carrying around the empty cup looking for the bin, she kept staring me in the hope I'd give it her again, magically full. She genuinely would've demolished a second if I'd bought one for her.

A lot of squirrels were pursued today. Much nicer to go when it's not half term.

Smol dog is asleep next to me and dreaming. I just watched her lip curl and had to gently pat her head and murmur, "it's okay, leave it alone," to get her to stop. 😂 Pretty sure she was dreaming about other dogs getting her squirrels.

#LitHodgepodge I'm not really very good at these, so... this might be my narrative voice, as filtered through Marcus? 😅 There's some dialogue, but mostly to make the non-dialogue bit make sense.

“And if I said I didn’t want to go?”
Marcus fidgeted in his seat, as much as it would allow. “Then I couldn’t make you. I’m not about to throw you over my shoulder and carry you there. But,” he said, taking a deep breath, “you’d probably get a phone call from Camille later. I did ask her if you really needed to be there…”
Blake let out a groan, dropping his head to his hands; Marcus wished he couldn’t see just how pale his knuckles turned as he gripped his mop of brown hair. Just on the edge of hearing, he caught Blake muttering various things about train tickets, travel times and something almost unintelligible, but Marcus assumed to be insults. Whether they were aimed at Camille or himself he didn’t want to guess.
Eventually he pushed himself upright again, hands falling to ball into fists beside his thighs and a flex to his jaw that hadn’t been there before. Marcus kept his mouth cautiously shut; Blake had no idea how tempted he’d been to break that awkward silence, but he’d sensed it would go very, very badly if he had. “At least,” Blake said slowly, “it’s tomorrow and not today.”
It looked like the other man had got the measure of him already. It was all Marcus could do not to duck his head, and that was mostly because if he moved again, he might vanish entirely down the back of the sofa. Just a pair of legs sticking out like he’d been thoroughly chewed.
Blake would probably be thrilled.
No, actually: he probably wouldn’t, because then Marcus would be a permanent fixture, even if it was just a pair of shins he had to shove aside every time he sat down. And there was nothing Blake had made plainer than his wish for all this to be over and done with.
Finally, he managed, “So… you’ll go?”
Blake’s eyes flicked across to him, but the smile Marcus hoped to see curve his pretty lips was depressingly absent. “It doesn’t look like I have a choice, does it?”

Who discovered the Pit was a hotly debated subject. The human Kingdom of Aribethia claimed their founding queen discovered it on her crusade to unite the lords. The elves of the forest nation of Valliwyn claimed that a vision from their goddess Vallimere had led them there first. The Assembly of Dwarves said of course they’d been the ones to find it because their ancestors dug the damn thing. The various goblin tribes all agreed that the dwarves had actually dug it, but that they’d found it next and used it as a giant toilet as a joke.
And so on and so forth.
Whoever had found it, the one universally agreed upon fact was that humans were the first to decide, “Hey, I should climb down there.”
A rush of fortune seekers crawled out of the woodwork of the world after news of the discovery spread. Explorers who believed they would be the first to plumb its depths. Mages who believed they could unravel the mystery of its creation and purpose. Craftsmen who could sell their supplies to both those types of fools. Merchants who could supply materials to those craftsmen.
Thus the small boomtown of Pit’s Burg was born.
After several dozen attempts it became apparent that the Pit was truly bottomless with nothing obvious inside it, but by then Pit’s Burg had already gathered up a significant portion of the realm’s runaways and cast-offs. These types had inspired lawmen to come, and then doctors came to treat the survivors of the scuffles, and then lawyers came to sue both sides, and then politicians came to tax the whole lot of them. Within a decade Pit’s Burg had grown into a full-fledged independent city-state only loosely related to the Pit itself.

Yet he never reveals any sadder feelings because he doesn't want to worry or inconvenience others, so while he doesn't realise it, he does mask.

The funny thing was, when we got to the bus stop this morning, smol dog's friend M and her dad were also catching it to go on holiday. 😂 So smol dog got company on the bus, so she behaved a little better, and it was fun to talk to someone on the way and while we were waiting for the train.

Took smol dog to the aquarium. It was even smaller than anticipated, more of a fish shop with visitors. 😅 They had a shark though! I held smol dog up to look, and while she wasn't interested... I've never seen fish come and look out the tank at something so avidly before. I think she looked tasty...

Spooky bird stories. My Halloween comic from 2024.

A comic titled Spooky Bird Stories. In panel 1, a turkey vulture is telling stories to other vultures, and it says, "She walked toward the source of the terrible smell. She got closer and closer, and then, to her horror, she saw... No dead body." A black vulture says "No!" and a turkey vulture says "Did someone already eat it??" In panel 2, a northern cardinal is telling a story to some songbirds. It says "They peered through the windows of the house at the gory scene. Zombies had smashed through the door in the night. The homeowner was dead. But worst of all... He hadn't refilled the feeders." An eastern bluebird says "Aaah!" and an American goldfinch says "It can't be!". In panel 3, A screech owl is telling a story to other owls. It says "And then the ghost fluffed itself up really big to appear scarier." A saw-whet owl gasps, and a long-eared owl says "Horrifying!".
