Genre of the day is when it sounds like Solange is singing about birds. Example 1

Genre of the day: melancholic, atmospheric, yelpy post-punk.
Album cover of Wilderness - Wilderness (2005). Bright, ornate bead-like pattern of many colours.

I miss fwing. Feels very fwingy here up north right now. But that just means a brief mud season before extra long winter, which is weeks away.

Lichen hike update: this is my third time looking at lichens on this range, but I was much more prepared than in years past. Highlights include two Western Waterfan (Peltigera gowardii) thalli in one stream, a semi-aquatic leafy little lichen. 🌿🧵

The last sentence. I’m really no expert on prison abolition, but I’m sure that “deserve” is the most devilish word in our language, and when combined with “criminal,” it chases all possible thinking out far into the wilderness.

Really enjoy this lichen-covered speed limit sign in my neighborhood
A speed limit sign that reads “speed limit 25” all of the numerals and letters are printed in black on the sign, and each of the numerals and letters is covered with lichens growing from their surfaces.

this is the kind of place that insufferable Church History nerds hang out right? I need to find who a historical figure was who would have known the wonderfully named Henry F Butts prior to his departure as a missionary from England to New Zealand in Dec 1841.

Happened across this unhinged Wittgenstein line
We speak of birds singing. When I was a boy I was bothered in listening to birds, because it obviously isn't singing. Finally someone said to me, "All right, don't call it singing, call it something else"
'. And soon I could listen to birds and enjoy it.

New Zealand sent over a team of firefighters to help with the wildfires (Yay!!!) but their local article makes us sound like a wasteland teeming with dangerous animals www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/9...
In western Canada, over 20,000 people were forced to flee communities in British Columbia over the weekend and in the US, crews in Washington have been fighting three wildfires that began burning in the Spokane area.
The New Zealand firefighters are experienced working in arduous conditions, including steep terrain and high temperatures, and living in fire camps in remote areas.
It's not just the scale of the wildfires that would be challenging for the Kiwi crews - they've been told to keep an eye out for local wildlife.
"Bears, scorpions, rattlesnakes any of those sorts of things that we typically don't have over here that are out to hurt us. It's a different environment for us...we just have to keep our wits about us."

Can any lichen folks help illuminate me about Nephroma taxonomy? McCune & Geiser (2023) say that N. helveticum is absent in the PNW. They say N. tropicum is expected. But I see records of N. helveticum (2 subspecies) from lichenologists, in databases, publications, etc. What gives? Recent changes?
