It’s no wonder so many universities are on the financial ropes. This gap was being subsidised by international fees, but successive govts pandering to right wing scaremongers have made it so hard for international students that many of them simply aren’t coming any more.

I'm pretty sure this was taken for propaganda purposes rather than a genuinely spontaneous event - the idea that normal, sometimes silly, life was going on despite (and *to spite*) the Nazis was an important message on the home front.
