Just heard Gladys Knight is retiring. Made me think of one of my favourite Viz comic one panel gags. For me, the set up is so archaic is what makes it funnier today.

Looking forward to my spot at the REBELLION FESTIVAL in Blackpool (literary stage at 8pm tonight). Talking about my memoir. I'm afraid it's SOLD OUT but that's kinda good! 😎 Meeting up with my pal, guitar hero CHRIS SPEDDING there, who has his spot tomorrow (Saturday). @Republic_Media

The mathematician John Venn was born on this day in 1834. To commemorate the occasion, here’s a poem in the form of a Venn diagram.
Poem title: At the Intersection

The poem is divided into two overlapping circles.

The left-hand circle is titled ‘me’ and the text reads:
the day we
went out to have
an ice-cream, we said nothing
just let our silence melt in
the air as we walked across the common
our love never tiring at all

The right-hand circle is titled ‘you’ and the text reads:
we should
have talked it over but
nothing ever seems to get
in your fat head. You are so
common that I wish we’d never met
at all and I’d married Tim instead

In the intersection of the poem (where the two circles overlap), the text reads:
we
have
nothing
in
common
at all

So whoda thought that Marc Bolan and Helen Shapiro were in the same year at the same primary school and were in a band. I'd like to think that they were managed by Alan Sugar, who was also in the same year at the same primary school!

The Horniman Natural History Gallery features this stunning walrus. It was transported to England, purchased in 1886. There, the taxidermists, having never seen one in the wild, stuffed it until the wrinkles smoothed out. This is a fully inflated walrus, my friends. MAXIMUM WALRUS. (📷: Tom Natt)
A giant walrus, the size of an elephant, sits on a fiberglass ice platform, in a display hall of a museum. It has long white tusks and pebbly brown skin.

Did you know there is a commemorative manhole cover in Whitechapel celebrating the defeat of the 2017 fatberg? To find it: head west out of the station along the north side of the High Street, it's by the pedestrian crossing in-line with the far end of the hospital opposite. w3w bond/fame/agents

The "bluesky is an echo chamber" think pieces that keep popping up really tickle me because they show how certain people genuinely believe social media should be for debating and arguing and not talking about the things that make you happy and sharing art with the world.

The volume of responses to this simple thread and the range of emotions detailed show that there is intrinsic worth in subjects like art. Never accept the views of those who want to tell you what is worthy of study and what is not. They know the price of all and the value of little.

There's also a solar gravity lens (SGL) focal point at ~547.6 AU where you could use the Sun's gravity as a giant telescope to scan exoplanets at great distances. Getting a probe to this point is daunting, but would let us see the surfaces of distant planets! Article at NASA here:

At the 1851 Great Exhibition in Hyde Park, London, the latest in scientific innovation was presented. I present to you: George Merryweather's "TEMPEST PROGNOSTICATOR" which uses leeches to predict approaching storms. 12 leeches are arranged in pint bottles around the central pillar with a bell.
A replica Tempest Prognosticator at the Whitby Museum, Whitby, UK. The tempest prognosticator was a weather forecasting system which attempted to predict storms with leeches trapped inside glass jars. An approaching storm was supposed to cause the leeches to climb chains dangling in the jars. The leeches climbing up the the chains caused bells to ring and warn of an approaching tempest. The device was invented in the 19th-century by George Merryweather.

Today’s poem is called ‘And Now for the Weather’.
And Now for the Weather

Today is set to be agreeably alliterative
across an assortment of areas
although the occasional metaphor
may cause some faces to cloud.

Idioms will be coming down like stair rods
in northern regions, while the south
may experience the odd outbreak of similes,
like an unexpected shower of arrows.

In coastal, littoral, and seaside areas,
synonyms remain likely.
Further inland, sudden gusts of hyperbole
look set to take your breath away

and a series of scattered euphemisms
will have you reaching for your wellies.
If you’re driving, please be aware that tautologies
of frozen ice are still affecting some roads,

after a heavy and prolonged flurry of oxymorons.
And finally – from tomorrow evening –
expect to see the return of some light litotes,
making next week’s outlook hardly the best.
