Casually throwing away a decade of work, probably 10s of millions of dollars worth, and making Edmonton start from scratch. Stopping a building boom in its tracks too. Red tape reduction my ass.
Edmonton will be required to adopt rules for high-density infill development that revert to the parameters in place before its 2024 zoning changes for housing types, density and height, and to restore minimum on-site parking requirements in place before 2020. Edmonton will have three months from Oct. 8 to amend its bylaw.

All this. And what's more, the VPD's own data show that in 2022, when they were on a moral panic crusade about crime under Kennedy Stewart, Vancouver had actually seen the biggest 4-year drop in crime of any time period on this chart.

You know you’re old when you think “I’ve never even heard of the Bayside Lounge?” and then you look it up and realize you used to go to trivia nights there almost weekly in the 90s.

Does everyone know you can stream @knowledge.ca for free and there are no ads? I was watching Knowledge more than Netflix so cancelled it. I do send $15 a month to Knowledge anyways because I think we’re very lucky to have it in BC.

I'm on principle opposed to the idea of Canadians being able to pay out of pocket for a better version of the national public broadcaster. Ie. a two-tier CBC. $5.99 is affordable - but you're paying ~$3 a month in taxes for Gem too. I'd rather we all pay $4 a month instead and remove ads for all.

Hot take: I don't think social media made people dumber. We've been dumb this whole time. It's just that you used to have to have a job that people sent their dumb letters to, to notice. This made "Engaging with fools" an occupational hazard rather than the 24/7 experience it is presently.

It’s been two years since Ontario Place West Island was destroyed for a planned private spa. Hundreds of trees were cut down - here’s a snapshot of the many species who lost habitat. 🧵
Side-by-side comparison of a landscape on the Toronto waterfront. In one scene, an island is covered in trees reflected in a still channel of water. The other image of the same place shows a barren stretch land with a pile of rubble in the centre.

Western Separatism is a fringe, white nationalist obsession. It was in 1981 when Holocaust-skeptic (to be generous) Doug Christie launched the Western Canada Concept, it was in 2019 when racist criminal Chris Barber's consigliere Brad Wall launched the Buffalo Project. Some things don't change.

When we talk about vehicle levies I think about working class people living where transit sucks. People living in transit starved areas shouldn’t be punished for having to have a car. I think targeted vehicle levies (if possible ) and congestion pricing are the way to go. Doing nothing is not.

Ian Patton @pattoni.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I can walk two blocks, hop on a bus, and be downtown Vancouver in less than 30 minutes. A vehicle levy makes sense for someone like me. My spouse has an annualy recurring job in Cloverdale. Transit takes about 2-3 hours to get there so she drives.

The National Post is using language that seems wildly irresponsible and dangerous here Citing ancient “Jewish law,” it labels Avi Lewis as a “rodef” The ultranationalist extremist who assassinated Yitzhak Rabin rationalized his killing on the same basis: www.theguardian.com/world/2020/o...
None of this applies, however, when a Jewish person presents a clear and present danger to the Jewish community. When that happens, Jewish thought is much more forceful: you must prevent the perpetrator from
causing harm.

Jewish law developed two character sketches to describe such scenarios. The first is known as a "mosar" — a Jewish person who informs to oppressive
authorities, potentially leading to the imprisonment, torture or death of community members. The second, called a "rodef," refers to a Jew who is actively pursuing another with the intent to harm or kill them. In both scenarios, the law is clear that a Jew is duty-bound to step in. Protecting the community and its members is the most important thing. It was around then that Yigal Amir, an earnest law student, made up his mind to kill the prime minister. Later he would insist he was not swayed by extremist rabbis; he had reached his own decision that Rabin - through his willingness to cede territory and to allow the creation of a Palestinian Authority, with its own armed police force - was a rodef and therefore a legitimate target. He got a weapon easily enough. With his brother, Amir was working on the creation of an anti-Palestinian militia. Nor was access difficult; on at least three occasions before the rally, Amir attended public events where Rabin was present. He was waiting for the right moment: he didn't want to shoot and miss.
