True; its impossible to picture londo acting differently precisely because its impossible to imagine him countenencing something like that scene in severed dreams where the narns just get mowed down in defense of something greater

I mean, on like three distinct occasions he agrees with you so hard that he knocks the whole government over on his own authority (Torhan, Cartagia, Virini kinda). But were any of his changes for the better? The most interesting question for me was always what he could possibly have done differently

The root of why so many discourses about voting On Here are so toxic is that the people who actually decide most elections have basically zero involvement in them, and on some level we all understand that.

Antebellum politics is fascinating, the South kept getting policy concessions and whipped themselves up into a paranoid rage anyway, essentially because they couldn't stand being culturally judged for having slaves

The lede of this story says Trump might be willing to walk away from Iran without a nuclear deal if it reopens Hormuz, which to me sounds like trading an Iranian nuclear weapon for recognizing Iranian sovereignty over the strait.

Stats like this reinforce my belief that "too much money in politics" is an outdated concern. Maybe money can buy you technicians who know how to control a narrative, if there are any such people, but in its raw form it seems useless past a certain relatively low threshold

yeah, the issue with viewing elections as a linear algebra problem where you solve for the optimal policy platform is that you tend to generate candidates that cant credibly signal that they believe any of this

the fact that this absolute shambles of a campaign operation drove the incumbent governor out of the race and won the primary with 73 percent should be a category 5 Red Alert for the establishment tbh

Increasingly clear that, however much you may approve of the kind of politics Platner represents, he is not and now can never be a viable vessel for them.

You're going to watch the entire legal establishment flip on its head, too, now that their lords and masters have informed them that it's a Reasonable Topic of Disagreement™. The idea that this was completely settled law for a hundred years is going to be totally verboten to mention.

I remember watching in total despair and bafflement as Pelosi futzed around with the idiotic proposal to remove Trump with the 25th Amendment. Even raising this cockamamie idea as a possibility made a mockery of the Constitution, which only envisioned one possible remedy for a crime of this gravity.

The elite psychosis about wind turbines and solar power feels very new, I do not think there was anybody in 1910 screaming that oil-driven turbines were a Satanic plot to undermine the True Christian Doctrine of steam boilers.

I'll admit I may be misinterpreting, but Thomas' dissent actually gives me vertigo - I struggle to see how what he is saying differs from "The founders appear to establish a system without a hereditary monarch, but surely they couldn't have meant that, there would have been no historical precedent"

As with some other things, i suspect if we have another dem president we will discover that the court did not so much transfer power to the executive as to themselves, ie they will find novel bullshit reasons to block a dem president the same way the find novel bullshit reasons to enable trump

I don’t worry about a few ultra-conservative or ultra-progressive people getting elected to Congress. I worry about Congress becoming increasingly irrelevant as an institution, replaced by executive orders and talk shows.

Good thread; explains the whole of the sentiment. My rent is rising faster than my salary. Therefore, I know I will eventually need to downsize; tomorrow ill be worse than today. This certainty colors all of my thinking; I can be saving 1/3rd of my very substantial income, and still feel doomed.

The good news is it means Trump doesn’t get exempted. He will suffer from the general malaise as much as, or even worse than, Biden did. The bad news is that it means the problem is probably still waiting for us on the other side of Trump. It’ll happen to us again. And it’s very hard to solve.

The odessey is a fantastic story, but not a majestic one, which is what people want it to be given its age and foundational role in our culture. It's like how some people want Mozart to have been this incarnation of the soul of music and then they read up on him and he was a fucking catboy

I think the problem for US media is that if you admit Hormuz is an almost irresolvable conundrum you also are implicitly arrayed against the president and his power-of-positive-thinking approach that it’ll magically open, placing you in the forbidden realm of Taking A Side

people don't realize how concentrated GOP fundraising is. more than half of all money that they got in 2024 was from donations over $1mn. it's like 200-300 rich cranks that keep the party operating. underrated explanation in why they've gone so insane.
