Over on LinkedIn (yeah, I dunno), I asked how people who object to big corporate AI chatbots are navigating work right now. I summed up my situation, both current and likely future, but my question came down to this: Will I have to quit or get a religious exemption? Or are people finding other ways?

A question for folks like me with ethical, environmental, and practical (https://lnkd.in/eZTHhYyQ) objections to using chatbot-like tools: how are you navigating this in your workplace? (This is not a...

This isn't a new thought, but locking our students into these corporate systems is doing them such a disservice. Locking our staff and faculty in isn't great either. I also assume a principled institution wouldn't push its students (or employees) to use chatbots, but maybe I dream too big.

I know of one university—in France—that uses mostly open source (Moodle instead of Canvas/Blackboard, LibreOffice instead of MS/Google, etc.). Do we have any colleges or universities in the US who are similarly principled? (And are they hiring remote from NY?)

One of the reasons I despise AI is how it robs imagination twice. First it steals from creatives and thinkers to make slop. Then it lets users bypass rather than learn a creative process. The political timing isn’t accidental. We need imagination to envision a better world that we’ll fight for.

Sometimes my wife and I like to send each other text messages as though they’re democratic fundraising messages, and I believe she has produced the jewel of the form.
, it's
and I
have some personal news to share with you.
Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I feel deeply that we should have salad tonight
This year has been challenging in many ways, and I have immense gratitude for the kindness and support of family, community, and people like you who have continued to stand by me through everything. It means the world, and I wanted you to be among the first to know that squash is in the oven and kale is in the fridge. As many of you are aware, ve been navigating one of the most challenging periods of my day while waiting for dinner.
Facing baseless federal hunger brought on by not eating since lunch, fighting for the working kids of this country, and now caring for a mean toddler and helping him grow up in a world that isn't always easy. But it has also reminded me exactly why I do this work and who I do it for.
I will never stop working to eat dinner. I will never stop fighting for what is right, even when there is also some feta in the fridge. And I will never stop being so very thankful that you are by my side in this important work and that there is tahini in the pantry for dressing
With love and gratitude,
stop to end

I'm not worried about the plague, but I am worried about covid, which we don't know how to prevent from damaging various body systems and becoming long covid. It causes so many premature deaths. I mask everywhere (and avoid crowds, even with my mask). If you don't mask, it isn't too late to start.

I trust Matthew Cortland, and they are not worried about the Russian plague hitting the US. So I'm not either. There's a state of emergency in my state about measles, which I am worried about. (I'm up on my vaccinations, but my immune system is actively being suppressed by medication.)

Very “the devil you know”. It’s another thing that I think Approval (or Star) Voting could help with; it’d be much safer to run a younger candidate from the same party without risking a split vote. You wouldn’t feel the need to “play it safe.” Instead, we keep voting for the walking dead.

All the people who are anti-Al or want to slow Al progress, I have one question:
If Al disappeared tomorrow, could you still get through an entire workday without ChatGPT, Claude, or any other Al tool?
Imagine Al was suddenly banned.
Would you actually be willing to give it up?

reply:

This is like being a meth head and asking someone who's never done meth how they're going to get through their day without meth
