Great Smoky Mountains National Park rangers found two separate suspects illegally harvesting ginseng roots: 1) 167 poached roots. 2) 521 roots (8 lbs). Undamaged roots will be replanted in the park, but data shows that only about 1/3 of those will survive. Ginseng can take 7–10 years to mature.

So these were taken on my walk to work, from an inner suburb to the city fringe (Karori to Kelburn, for locals). I grew up in the area, and I absolutely would never have seen these birds in people's front yards 30 years ago. Wellington & its people made a choice to bring them back & we succeeded.

For #TurtleTuesday, a Thornscrub Tortoise (Gopherus evgoodei) outside its burrow one morning in Sonora, Mexico. Described in 2016, this tortoise inhabits the belt of thornscrub deciduous forest habitat found in Sonora and Sinaloa states. More deets in the ALT. #herps #turtles #NaturePhotography 🌿
